Just to muddy your decision waters a little bit <g>…
We use Fractal Painter (with X2) in its Mac incarnation at the studio and find
it an excellent program but on the windows side there is another possible
option. Fauve Matisse isn't quite as wonderful as Painter, but then again it
isn't as expensive either <g> and it has a few features that you can only get
with X2. Notably: the ability to keep multiple floating selections. It will
give a series of naturalist brushes, autocloning and the like that were so
wonderfully pioneered by Painter.
If you were looking for a serious natural painting tool, I'd still recomend
Painter, but you expressed concern about your traditionaal drawing skills.
Perhaps Matisse bears some looking into as a sort of "Painter Lite". We use it
on the PC side of the studio and it's been very good, especially for its low
price.

Good point. While I haven't used Matisse, all reports have been very
favorable. I got my Fractal as a free bundly with my Kurta XGT, so the price
is something I didn't take into consideration.

Sorry, John. I meant to send my message to Mike Kelly, who started this thread
(dang reply buttons jump up and bite me every now and again <g>).
I'm very happy with my copy of Matisse and for the price, it bears looking
into. They had a special offer up until Dec 25th (I think) of 93: Matisse for
$99.00.
I don't know if they still have a deal going on.

I got Matisse on the $99 deal also, but when I ordered they told the offer
would expire the end of January.

I know what you mean. Although I'm the IBM user in our studio, I always refuse
to get led into "my platform is bettere than your platform" debates. That being
said, when it comes down to needing to do some image editing, I'll use the
Quadra and Photoshop, if it's free. If Windows were a toaster, I'd have taken
back to the store I bought it from long ago<g>.
