Alex, depending on what you have available for paint programs, you may be able to do this thru a combination of texture and opacity mapping onto a plain sphere. On an earth texture map, paint the continents white and the water black. Use this as an opacity map on your sphere. The land should be visible while the water is invisible. By manipulating the colors of your texture map and the opacity sliders you could come close to the effect you're looking for.

PMJI, but I think he'll need to enable two sided materials as well. It seems to me I did this (the continents on a glass globe) once, using the opacity maps, and the back sides of the continents won't render without two sided stuff. Then again, I may be suffering from too little sleep…
