TOASTER on IBM???
13 messages in this thread
HI! my name is Jovann from MTL and I would like to no if there will ever be an
I.B.M. (compatible) version of TOASTER and when will i be able to get it. You
see i'am one of those "not so fortunate" who has to work on IBM's because all
of my major clients have IBM machine. I'am working with AUTOCAD product from
AUTODESK, 3D and all that stuff and i would like very much to start producing
video stuff!!!SOON…
Problem is, due to the limitations of the IBM compatible system, I (personally)
don't think the speed will be there for a while (as far as ray tracing and 3D
graphics go)…point in case. trueSpace and TOPAS run on IBM and neither (even
on a Pentium) can equate a toaster on a 2000. BTW, I don't even own an Amiga…
LightWave rendering on a standard 486/DX2 66 is considerably faster than
an 040/33 Amiga based system. This is especially true for FPU intensive
tasks, such as raytracing.

Your response seems to have some interesting implications. That you would know
of the relative LW rendering speeds on the two platforms, seems to imply that
at least a partial port to the 486 has been made.
What can you add?
Elliot
ScreamerNet will run render on a 486 based system running Windows NT.
You'll have to trust me that it's faster than an 040.
GT
Hmmm,
Does this mean you have LW rendering on a 486????
Called ScreamerNet John, look into it. <g>
GT
So how long 'til the general public gets to see this 486 version of
LightWave???? (Have they ported just the rendering engine, or the
Layout/Modeler too?)
Thanks,

It's only a rendering kernal, called ScreamerNet, and runs on any NT
compatible CPU. It will be released with the standalone versions of
LightWave and Modeler. A 486 running NT will able to render LightWave
scene files. The only drawback is that you need alot of RAM for the NT
OS.
Ummm,
I don't think that the Standalone versions are going to support it yet
Greg..
You know who.
Yowza! So the rendering engine _will_ 'be released with the standalone
versions of LightWave and Modeler'? Does this mean the 3.5 version that
current users will be upgrading to?!?
'need alot of RAM for the NT OS.' No biggie, my girlfriend's 486 has 20MB
now, and she's planning on upgrading to the Daytona OS pretty soon here.
(Now, if only my friend can come through with those 2GB drives, I could
give her one in exchange for rights to use her system while she's at work.
Of course, the 2GB drive could be used to store the occasional rendered
image too… :^)
Thanks much for the good news! (Well, sort of…Just read JG's
response..:^(

Greg was a bit wrong…
The new Standalone version has the ScreamerNet CONTROL panel, but you
still need to purcahse the rendering engine software for extra…
JG
So, does this 'rendering software for extra…' mean that I can (or will
soon be able to) buy a version to run on any MIPS or NT machine, or is
NewTek going to continue to give Deskstation Tech. a monopoly on
ScreamerNet?
