Wacom Working?

Mike,
I noted some time ago that you've got a Wacom ArtZ tablet. Are you using it
with 3DS?
If you are, please tell me how the heck you've got it set up. I've tried using
the WADI385P.exp driver but 3DS just locks up when I try to use the tablet.

I noticed your question about using a Wacom with 3DS. I suggest loading the
Wacom dos mouse driver and not using the adi tablet interface. I have an older
6×9 tablet that works very well with the supplied wmouse.com, leaving 3DS
config set to 'mouse'. The wacom mouse driver does seem to preclude using a
mouse at all once 3DS is loaded.

Thanks for your advice. I was hoping I could use both the mouse and the tablet
as I do in Windows. It looks like that won't be possible.
I'm going to call WACOM and see what they say. They do seem to have a very good
tech support operation.

FWIW, I've found tablet mode in 3DS to be pretty much of a bust, mainly because
none of the drivers seem to work right.

Yeah, a "bust" is right. When I switch to tablet mode, the computer locks up
completly and I have to reboot.
After working for three full days to get the tablet to peacefully coexist with
other Com ports and IRQ's, I have come to the realization that we need to
re-orient our technological priorities:
I have sent a wire to Washington demanding that all development work on
spreadsheets and screen savers immediately be halted and all those human and
hardware resources be diverted into solving this IRQ nonsense. When we have a
utility which will automatically figure out which IRQ is being used by what
device and then properly allocate interrupts and addresses then — and only
then — can I allow things to go back to normal.
I think I'm going to send an amendment to my previous wire to add the
requirement that all this tablet-not-working-with-3DS and AAP also be solved
before any more spreadsheet updates and other such uneeded software is
developed.

Once you get your tablet working, you can try installing a sound card.

Thanks for the suggestion, Jack but I'm way ahead of you. I've got a another
computer upstairs with a sound card which has 3 modes; each of which requires
its own interrupt.
I've given up on that one. I'm thinking about trading it in for a Mac — or a
nice am/fm table radio.

I'm very proud of the fact that I've got a single machine that operates with a
sound card, a network card, a CD-ROM drive, and a flat-bed scanner. (Not to
mention a serial-port mouse, modem, etc.) Of course, I've got five different
start-up configurations and haven't tried hooking up a tablet…

All things considered, its kinda amazing that complex programs like 3DS work
well on a PC but dinky little sound cards are so difficult. I've heard that
half of all "multimedia" add-on sound board kits are returned because no one
knows how to install them properly.
With all the pandemic problems, you'ld think someone would have come up with
some real, practical solutions.

Sounds like your system and my system should do lunch sometime – they've got a
LOT in common. Especially the part where it took six months to work, even with

Just think, a year from now, you can buy an entirely new computer, a new
operating system, all new cards, and then you'll be Plug And Play compatible,
and instead of fighting IRQs and DMA channels, you'll be fighting new conflicts
heretofore unforeseen! 🙂

Alec: Sorry it has taken so long for a reply, I have just rebuilt my machine.
In your autoexec.bat, add the following lines for DOS (3DS) operation.
c:\wacom\wmouse.com
c:\wacom\wset p
The "p" parameter sets it in pressure mode, although 3DS does not use it. This
works fine for me. This is exactly how the manual says to set it up. I believe
your problem might be the wadi385.exp driver.

I see that you're using the Wacom tablet as a mouse in DOS. I was hoping to be
able to use both the mouse and the tablet simultaneously in 3ds.
If you load the wmouse.com driver as you do in your autoexec.bat, then you
can't use a mouse at all — only the tablet.

Alec, I have not tried to use both mouse and tablet in 3DS. They both will work
simultaneously in Windows though. I have had some driver conflicts (TSR Hell)
with this tablet as well.
