Anybody out there savy on Epson scanners? I need some help, please
Just set up a new Epson ES-800C with my A2000, using appropriate cable
supplied with ASDG driver kit, into the parallel port on my GVP G-40 @
33.The GVP I/O control is properly set. I have 2 megs chip ram, 16 megs
fast ram on the GVP board, 2 internal hard drives, Picasso II, Emplant,
VLab and Opalvision boards. I am trying to use the Epson-scan-to-disk
program. I used expert install and allowed for EPSONNOCACHE and
EPSONDISABLE to be added to my user-startup sequence.
The scanner turns on with the power switch. When I boot up my computer,
the scanner initializes, then indicates ready. On running
Epson-scan-to-disk, I get an error message indicating that the computer
can't find the scanner. I've checked my connections.
What next? Your assist will be appreciated.

At least until recently, the Epson driver directly controls the parallel
hardware. So the loader won't work with 3th party IO extension boards.
Connect the scanner to your Amiga port…

Sorry to butt in, but I noticed the subject and I wanted to ask some experts.
I am going to pick up a used Golden Image hand scanner. I really cannot afford
a newer version or a flatbed, so this is a start.
I want to be able to scan text (new papers, not old) and convert it to ASCII.
Does anyone know of good Amiga software to accomplish this without costing
ALOT of money?
I would appreciate any help. I have absolutely no experience in this area with
an Amiga.

The only OCR software I'm aware of for the Amiga costs a lot of money. On
the PC, of course, this capability is "free" with a lot of fax and
scanning software.
Also, handscanners aren't well suited to OCR because they are more
error-prone than flatbed scanners, and the OCR software needs every bit of
help it can get.

I will be picking up an old IBM clone this week. Do you have any suggestions
for the Amiga and IBM software?
I was told that doing OCR with handscanners is tough, but I am not about to
not eat for a while. Maybe once I get a better job, but for now, I will have to
make do.

Typing is probably faster and cheaper than OCR with a handscanner.
There is only one piece of Amiga OCR software, that from the same guys who
do Touch-Up. (Their name escapes me at the moment.)

I very rarely use the ASDG scanner programs (not very reliable with my
'040 A3000) but I don't recall the capability to set parallel port
parameters – just uses the native Amiga parallel port. You might try
connecting the ES-800C directly to the Amiga port vice the GVP's. You
might have to disable or set the GVP I/O control stuff to get things
working even after that…
