I sent this message once before but didn't find an answer.
I run an A2000 with G'40 @33, 2 meg chip ram, 16 meg 32 bit ram
on G'40 board,WB 2.0, 2 HD's (Quantum 100 and Maxtor 203) daisy
chained internally to the SCSI-2 on the accelerator, Picasso II
and Emplant Deluxe board (with which I am very happy). My sys-
tem is working flawlessly. However I am unable to run Magic Work-
bench. As I remember when I spoke to you at the WOCA-Toronto in
December, your system was similar to mine. Were you not using
Mag.WB?
I have tried installing it from my Workbench and from the shell,
both methods resulting in blank screen. If I click on the Show
MagicWorkBench IFF icon and get a Picasso Change screen re-
quester, I can get the picture using hires lace but not using
a Picasso screen. I have tried the installation with my usual
Picasso 800×600 screen mode (8 colors).
How can I work around this? Will the soon to be released WB 3.1
from Expert Services (Village Tronics) for the A2000 allow me
to use MgicWorkbench?
My monitor is an Idek 17" multisynch, max vert freq 38.
I would appreciate any help you can give me with this.

I NEVER EVER run things like MagicWB. These types of programs often times poke
private structures, and you are asking for trouble just running them. I would
say that about 70% of the problems people have with installing EMPLANT are
related to euro-hacks like MagicWB, NickPrefs (really evil), KCommodity,
Pointer-X (sorry Steve, it's not compliant), etc.

MagicWB is not a program, even less a hack…
It's just a collection of icons together with some patterns and some easy
to use install scripts (yes, simple DOS batches).
But NickPrefs is included in the distribution of MWB for all 2.x users
which want to use the background patterns. It's true that NickPrefs HAS
some problems, so I recommend not to use it.
For MWB, the only drawback would be that the background patterns cannot be
used with Amiga OS 2.x. But you can use all icons of course.
Or doesn't Emplant work with 8 color WB screens?!
And you should be aware that there are some european hack writers here
(for my part: MagicMenu) who really don't appreciate your general
juggement.

This was my message to Jim Drew. Could you give me some advice on this? I
think MagicWB has a great appearance and would like to be able to use it.
I did try to use it without installing NickPrefs and still
couldn't…twice my system locked up completely and the only way I was
able to get up and running again was to boot with my WB 2.0 floppy and
then erase all MagicWB files by hand.
Any help would be appreciated!

What version of the Picasso software are you using? Since EMPLANT is not even
running yet, it is not at fault here. There have been problems with some euro
software poking private structures, which results in many things not working
when re-targeted.

I did not mean to offend you. 🙂 There are more poorly written euro programs
simply because there are a LOT more euro programs in general. Many programs do
poke private structures, which causes problems. I have never used MagicMenus,
but I have heard great things about it, and have only heard of problems with
MWB and NickPrefs, not MM.

I use MWB background patterns with WB2.1, no problems… 16 color at that.
And the icons, oc.

MagicWB is NOT a hack. In fact, it isn't even a program. It's simply a
collection of icons, backgrounds, and fonts that are designed to improve the
look of your Workbench. By itself, it can do no harm.
However, the NickPrefs program which is included with MagicWB to allow backdrop
pictures on pre-3.0 machines is a hack and can cause havoc with all sorts of
programs.
Therefore, using the imagery from MagicWB is always safe. Using NickPrefs is
asking for trouble on certain system configurations.
Thanks for the info, Wayne. I assumed that MagicWB was a program by itself
that loaded images (icons, etc.). I didn't realize it required NickPrefs.
