Well, I've had an error message pop up a couple of time lately, and it's driving me nuts I work on my 3d scene, and then when I go to save it out, 3ds thinks for a while, and gives me an error "Write Error on File" or something like that. And no matter if I try to save it to a different drive or anything, or how many times I try, it keeps giving me the message. From that point, I'm out of luck, because 3ds won't save it. Any ideas? I had this happen a few times a while back, but had forgotten about it. Now it is popping up again. It's gotten to be so bad, that I've went back to using 3ds3 for major modeling/editing instead of 3ds4. R3 hasn't given me any problems. BTW, my R4 is the original, because my dealer never sends me 4c1. Could it be something to do with that? Thanks for anyone's help and ideas. Mark

Hi Mark, are you realy sure, you have enough space on your harddisk. And if it is, do you have the swapfile on the same disk on that you like to save the file? May be, your DOS shows enough space, but while using 3ds the swapfile needs the most of it… … just an idea… …and hope it helps. greetings from germany Claus

There is plenty of room on my hard drive, and I'm not swapping to disk when this happens. I have 32 megs of RAM, and 3ds shows I'm only using 19 of it, so I haven't breached the swap barrier…. Mark

Are you using liquid speed? I thought I saw a thread somewhere that had a similiar problem and that it was related to using liquid speed. If you are usign disable it (I think you hold both shift keys down when loading 3d Studio) and see if that fixes the problem. Peter W.

Nope, no liquid speed here. So that knocks that idea. My current model I am saving is 520,000 faces, and saves out as a 12meg 3ds mesh file. Mark

>> I had this happen a few times a while back, but had forgotten about it. Here's a useless answer… I saw the same thing a few times. I couldn't save my mesh to ANY filename, drive, etc. Nor would HOLD work. Reset the system and everything ran just ducky. I haven't seen it happen since then. Sorry. At the time, I was convinced that Lantastic or Share had locked a file on the network and wouldn't release it. Are you running any type of network? – Dave

No network present as well. Like you said, you reset the system, and it will usually work, but I'm scared to do anything major in R4 if my work won't save. Like you mentioned, once it gives you the error, you can not save to any drive ANYWHERE. Mark

>> I'm scared… Since that odd error occured, I've been far better about saving frequently using the "+" button to create incremental saves. In the worst case, I figure that I will only lose 15 minutes to 1 hour's work. As I mentioned, the problem has not resurfaced here in months. I don't recall how this relates to my C1 update. I'd like to continue tracking the problem, because it DOES sound like a bug, potentially very frustrating, and most definitely hard to pin down. (Almost as frustrating as another intermittant problem that pops up — "can't create flic file" — that is equally hard to figure out. Out of curiosity, I'd like to compare 3DS.SET files. Would you be willing to zip yours up an e-mail it to me? I have a suspicion about some of the file paths. I've had unusual results when saving to or accessing "root" directories. Again, nothing consistantly reproducible. – Dave

As a last resort you might want back up your drive and then reformat and then reinstall all your software and then restore your data. I have done this couple times for 3d Studio and Windows apps. Seems to stabalize my system as a whole. Peter W.

>> back up your drive and then reformat and then reinstall all your software Good suggestion. With all the swapping and huge quantities of images stored and removed, I'm sure fragmentation becomes a serious concern. – Dave

I'll try to zip it and send it to ya when I get a chance… Mark
