#3DS R5 for Win95?

By the way, does anyone know if 3ds rel. 5 will run under win95. If not, why not. What API calls would be incompatible with the win95 32 API? Microsoft NT programs run unchanged under NT and win95? I hope Autodesk can figure out a way to perform this technical feat for us users who are using a single intel chip to run 3ds.

FWIW, the next release of 3DS is not called R5 but 3DS NT. As far as Win95 goes there are features unique to NT which 3DS NT will take advantage of… So what happened to R5? Wait and see…. <G> John

Hi John, << ..FWIW, the next release of 3DS is not called R5 but 3DS NT. .. >> ahh..conjecture ;-).. I don't believe that there has been *any* announcement regarding _even_ the name of the next release. jonas[adesk]

ahh.. conjecture 😉 Not when one of your fellow programmer attended a meeting with The person who should know, and posted his observations regarding that meeting here openly on the forum… if there's a problem here, it didn't originate with me… that comment aside there is more and more evidence to support it that is freely available… If you're in charge of rumor control… there are big leaks… so someone is not doing their job… but please don't call it conjecture on my part… John

This from Multimedia Marketing. The next version of 3D Studio will run on Windows NT. The exact "name" of the product has not been determined, nor has a release date been announced. Please stay tuned. Kathy Clinton Multimedia Marketing

>> Please stay tuned. << Will do, thanks for the post. John

<< but please don't call it conjecture on my part…>> How about "non-official gossip"? Bottom line, no matter what has been said by anyone here on the forum, or elsewhere, the only _official_ announcement is "The next release of 3D Studio will be an NT Release." All else is subject to be called rumour. -Brian

Brian, >> Bottom line, no matter what has been said by anyone her on the forum… "The next release of 3D Studio will be an NT Release." << Right! Have planned on it! Look forward to it! Can't wait! 🙂 Thanks, John

Hi, Brian, do you have any inside info on how the existing IPAS routines would be compatible with the NT 3DS? Or do we need to get a updated NT version from vendors? I have tons of IPAS, such as the Yost Group 2, 6, 7, plus Gradient FX, and Bones Pro, Mirage, Magic and Bubbles. I am seriously worried. There is a rumor that the existing IPAS is not going to be useable in NT version, nor that the vendors can do anything about it. It is true?

I realize that, but why make it INCOMPATIBLE with win 95, if you don't have to.

>> why make it INCOMPATIBLE with win 95… << That is a most bizarre claim. This is fourth of July weekend not April 1st… hey I like a good fantasy as much as the next guy but lets get real… what would be the motive? ( The answer to this question could be most entertaining… ) John

How about long file names, drag and drop, compatibility with over 20 million users, less stringent ram requirements, 32-bit robustness, and plug and play support that would ease adding hardware support for 3ds. I could go on, but I don't understand your indignation especially since you can support nt and win 95 with a single code base.

Rico, I'm not indignant… I just asked you to support your claim that Autodesk is deliberately making 3DS incompatible with Win 95… I find that idea totally absurd… the examples you cite are limitations of Win 95 and have nothing to do with Autodesk… IMO you're bitching at the wrong people, if its a compatiblitiy issue it belongs squarely on Microsofts shoulders… not Autodesk… John

You're not indignant, and forgive the characterization. I'm not bitching, I'm just lobbying for backward compatibility, and that is function of the software manufacture. There is a way that this can be done since win95 share most of there 32-bit API. I will post is as a wishlist item. Didn't mean to offend.

Rico, >> You're not indignant…. << Absolutely not! Insensed maybe…. <g> Joking aside if I was ADESK and having followed the trajectory Win 95 has taken over the last few years I wouldn't make any commitment to Win 95 until it was on the shelf and available to the general public, because its been like chasing a moving target with no clear direction on where it was going exactly. Now, however it looks like there's some accomodation from both camps as NT 3.52 will have the Win 95 interface incorporated… but you may also know that NT hasn't exactly been sitting still either the last few months and as more and more feedback is being generated by the customer base things are changing rapidly. It remains to be seen what differences will exist and what potential benefit might arise out of development efforts with regard to Win 95 and 3DS. There are quite possibly other factors that would preclude any advantage to running portions of it within Win 95… only time will tell. My experienced hunch is that if any of these things make sense in that ADESK will follow through with some way of addressing what can be worked out in this regard… but its got to make sense. At this juncture I'm very skeptical about whatever potential benefit might be derived from porting or dealing with some aspect of Win 95… I could speculate on some potential benefits but with Siggraph right around the corner… I think its better to just wait and see…. and have a little faith in the meantime… Posting a wishlist is always an option and a very good way of expressing your interest in some aspect of 3DS. BTW no offense taken… of some of things I've been called, "indignant" hardly qualifies as a slight. <G> (not that I want to encourage you. <BG>) John

My understanding is that Microsoft will soon be offering a WIN 95 interface for Win NT after the original Win 95 is released. Therefore, users who select Win NT (such as 3DS NT users in several months) should still be able to enjoy whatever benefits are present in the Win 95 interface.

Warner, << My understanding is that Microsoft will soon be offering a WIN 95 interface for Win NT after the original Win 95 is released. >> Microsoft has already released an early beta version of it. Check out my message "Win95 UI for NT released" in the Hware/OpSys/video section for details. Mark

>> Therefore, users who select Win NT (such as 3DS NT users in several months)<< Hi out there, does anybody have an idea, when the 3DS 5NT will be available? In 1995, 1996? Please give me a sign. Greetings Claus Diekmann

I'm running R4 under win95 now with no set backs.. R5 will be only for winnt35. Our adesk rep said development for R5 is only under NT at this time.
#178222From: Rico C. AlexanderJul 2, 1995 4:27 PM
Does this mean that anyone who doesn't upgrade to NT will forever be using be using rel. 4 under the constrictive environment of dos.
