#RCD1000 NT read support?

All,
I noticed a Pinnacle RCD1000 ad that emphasized the fact that the drive could
be used as a general-purpose reader in addition to its writing capabilities,
and it reminded me that the RCD202 was in fact *not* supported, even as a
reader, under NT. Does anyone know if they've corrected this shortcoming with
the 1000?

It depends on the driver more than the drive. You can use the RCD 1000 as a
multisession reader with Adaptec's ASPICD.SYS driver. Whether this works with
NT I do not know. Suspect not.

You're right, ASPICD.SYS does not work with NT. I take it from your reply that
the RCD1000 will not as a reader under NT either?

Not until there's a driver for it, but I think that's the only thing you have
to wait for — there's no hardware reason why any CD recorder shouldn't work
under NT. Have you tried asking Pinnacle if they know of one? I'm looking into
this in the meantime and will post as soon as I get an answer.

I have reported in a couple of places to Microsoft that Windows 95 and NT do
not have drivers for reading from the CD recorder. The RCD 1000 is a SCSI-2
reader and should read multisession discs with a standard CD ROM driver. We
are working on our 95/NT version that will be available at the time Windows 95
releases. I will make sure that I report also to our developers about reading
within Easy CD Pro. Currently Easy CD Pro does not support NT.
Why does V3.0 of EZCD say that it supports Windows 95 if it doesn't run under
NT… ??

3.0 supports Windows '95 in 16-bit mode, which I believe is clearly stated in
the press release. We will have another version out later this year which will
be 32-bit, and will therefore support Win '95 in 32-bit mode as well as NT.

I think almost any Windows 3.1 software is running under Windows '95.
And Georges is right: According to Microsoft, a program that declares to be a
Windows '95 program must also work under Windows NT otherwise it will not be
certified by Microsoft.

If that's the case, I suppose that 3.0 "runs under" Windows '95 and the NT
version will truly "support" it. We have made it clear to Windows '95 users
what they're getting; I'll have the packaging checked on this (thanks for the
tip, George).

I never read the press release I only looked at the outside of the box and it
has that little gold thing that says It supports Win 95.

Yes, in Windows 95/NT. We will have a Pro NT version shipping when Windows 95
is officially released.

Yes but as I am sure that you know to officially get the Win 95 Logo you need
to run under NT. That is why I ask!

Running under NT and supporting NT are two different issues. When someone
claims to support an operating system, my understanding is that they run under
it in native mode, not as a backward-compatible thing.

I am sure that when MS gives its seal it will mean that the programs really
runs under NT not just … start the program o.k. we'll give you the sticker

Microsoft has created an extension to ISO 9660 called Joliet to handle long
filenames (how gracefully I don't know). Software makers like us just have to
support Joliet to get them onto our discs.

Win95's Joliet will support Unicode, the ISO 10446 spec for a 16-bit character
set. CDFS, Win 95's replacement for MSCDEX, will act as a "receiver" for
Joliet. CDFS is not ISO 9660-strict, allowing for longer filenames.
All this and more will be revealed in the August issue of CD-ROM Professional.
CD Producer by American Infoscience claims to work under NT. I will be testing
it this week with a Philips/Plasmon/Yamaha.

I am looking desperatly for a couple of month of a HW/SW combination to produce
CD's under NT. I have to build an archieve system so I need something like an
SDK. Please let me know of your experience with CDR under NT. What limitations
you experience and what you would recommend. I am holding back on purchasing
CDR hardware until I can get some results from someone.

You might be better off talking direct to the sw manufacturers, like Deirdre or
Steve or Paul — they can tell you exactly what they've got. So far, I've been
told no one has an NT version yet, but everybody's working on them (of course.)
It is a bit more than a new driver, however — this kind of software is written
at a very low level, and it has to be completely ported to the new operating
system, not just patched.

Incat will have an NT version of Easy-CD Pro by the end of summer (in time for
the official release date of Windows 95). If you want to see what the current

I'm surprised you haven't heard from at least some of them already — they're
here online. Check out the CDVENB forum for incatsystems (Deirdre) and
elektroson (Paul). I don't think OMI is there, but Steve or someone else is
usually hanging around here. There are other mfgrs represented here, too, but
those came to mind/keyboard readily. Both Deirdre & Paul are in Europe, but
Steve is in California. OMI's phone is 408-376-3500.

Oh well. We wanted it to be a surprise but since everybody else is saying it I
might as well let the cat out
of the bag. Elektroson is currently developing a series of new GEAR versions.
You can expect versions
for NT and 95 (both 32bit versions) around the release date of 95 (mabey
sooner). Also OS/2 and SGI
versions will be available soon. Also both our UNIX versions and our Mac
versions are getting a complete
overhaul so keep checking out the CDVendorsB forum (GO GEAR) for the latest
news.

Yes OMI will also have a 32bit version out by August. Our 16 bit version is
working under '95 but the 32 bit version is Multi-Threaded.
Our Vendor forum is under construction at this time.
