Does anybody have contacts/brands and experiences on inkjet CD printers that
they would like to share?
Matthew Leek of New Z Productions showed me some of the latest samples of discs
printed with the Craig Associates inkjet printer last week. Really beautiful!
And he had some samples of the new TDK pure white printable blanks, too. Makes
the colors stand out better than the pseudo-gold color. (I've been campaigning
for a long time for the white.)
Another idea is to have blanks silk screened with a logo, and then with an area
that can be printed with the CAI printer. The One-Off CD Shops are
experimenting with this now — one of our ink vendors has some white printable
ink they say would work for that. You can call 800-340-1633 / 801-531-7585 for

From what I have heard from users, the Ink jet technology is just not there
yet. I looks good when you use small thin lines to represent colors, but if you
want to lay down a lot of ink, the ink will run.
The thermal technology looks ok (I just received a sample from Rimage). Only
black, and still 300 dpi.
I have been using small disc labels since '92, and will be creating a full disc
label soon, which will be better than what I have seen in the full disc labels
on the market. They look nice when run through a color copier or color laser
printer.

Matthew Leek was telling me about the results they've seen on different brands
of media. ** Lurker alert! Please note, this is not a comment on the data
writing, just the printable labels on CD-Rs!** Apparently some work better
than others. You can call Matt at 408-246-5609 for more details. The samples
he showed me at Replitech do display a difference in the ink's "bleeding" on
different discs.
Meanwhile, Rimage is offering several different colored ribbons on their
printer, and they're working on a multicolored ribbon. With the current model,
if you want more than one color on one disc, you have to change the ribbon and
run the disc through again, risking misregistration if you jar the disc out of
position during the ribbon change. Since the ribbon must be cut to remove it,
that is not a particularly viable solution for most people — time and money
intensive.
