Hi Have a Client who wishes to make their own CDs, nothing complex, just a few files (Acrobat reader and .pdf). Before they commit to buying a device, I would like to test the speed they would get at single, double, quad etc. so I can set the compression ratios accordingly. Is there a utility which simulates CD access speed to files? TIA John Peat

John, what you want to do can be achieved by simulating a CD using the CD Emulator driver of WinOnCD ToGo!. This will allow you to build up your CD like you would when burning a CD. Instead of writing a disc you can then use the Preview facility. This will create a virtual CD that can be accessed as a MSCDEX device. The device driver is adjustable to simulate single, double or quadruple speed. A demo of WinOnCD ToGo! can be downloaded in the CeQuadrat section of the CDROM B Vendor Forum (GO CEQUADRAT). Best regards, Thorsten von Vietinghoff CeQuadrat GmbH

Hi John, To tell you the truth, the best way to test is to actually burn a CD! There is no better solution. You can have it done by any One-Off-Shop (Jerry, Kathy?). The major advantage is that you can test it on a number of different CD-ROM players on different machines with different interfaces. These are all factors contributiong to the speed. A CD-Simulator will always be set to either a Perfect World settings (by the book) or a worst case scenario. Good luck, Paul Deckers Elektroson

John, Just an observation here. Recording speed has _nothing_ to do with playback speed so there is no advantage to checking recording speeds to figure out what compression ratio you'll be using. Recording speed and playback speed are independent of each other. BTW, if you (or your client) like we can burn the discs for you. Our business is just such a service. Jerry Warner CD Solutions, Inc.
