#Faraway newcomer

Hello, I am Gaetan from faraway island state Mauritius and I am new to
compuserve. I am a 3DSR2 user wishing to upgrade to 3DSR4. What is the current
price for this upgrade ? Also I am interested to invest in a non-linear online
broadcast video editing board for the PC and through lack of information I
cannot decide between the Targa 2000 PCI, the Plum, and the Perception Video
Recorder. I would welcome some advice.Thanks

Based on everything I've seen and heard I would go with the PVR. IMHO

situated about 2000kms east of East Africa in the middle of the Indian Ocean.

Welcome! We're all beginning to be only as far away as a phone line and a
keyboard. You will learn lots about 3DS and different hardware on this forum.

Hello from Stuttgart, Germany, and welcome to the Club … Regarding the
Non-linear Edit-system, there is, if you want to and if you can afford a real
big-bang solution, which you didn't mention: The FAST VM DP/R most high-end
users use the system, and here comes why: First: It can be used as a normal
editing panel for video-reecorders no matter if consumer or proffessional.
Second: It has awesome lots of real-time video effects keying, picture in
picture and so on. Third: It offers the best quality. It uses a array of 2
SCSI2 or wide-Scsi controllers & Disks, allowing compression schemes as low as
1:3 or even 1:2 This quality is unmatched by all other systems. Quattro: It can
playback 2 Video Streams at a time, for, say, overlaying or wipes a absolute
neccessary thing. ( The other systems have to render it) Fifth: lots of things
i can't mention completly as 3d studio driver, animation job processes for
network rendering, alpha/overlay recording of multiple sources and so on….
But: The VM (Grabber/ Video Controller) is about $2500 (German Market…) and
the DP/R (Hard Disk Video recorder) is about $4500.

If you have 30-50K to spend you might take a look at the Matrox Studio. It has
non-linear capabilities as well as A-B-C roll editing capabilities. Audio
mixing, Video switching/mixing, digital effects, etc. It runs in Windows 3.1
but hardly resembles a PC anymore. It even comes in a rack-mount box these
days.
We've been using a PAR for preview & some corporate videos. Just set up a PVR 2
days ago! So far it looks pretty good. For on-line work you can use simple cut
edits, but any other transitions will need to be done off-line. Unless the
Windows NT version can handle it?
I've seen, but not used the Targa 2000. All I can say is that we've been very
happy with TrueVision products before. The Targa 64+ has been the most
reliable, rugged, compatible board I've seen in a PC. We've been using 4 or 5
of them for years.
Don't know about the Plum.

Pleased to meet you and thanks for all the advice. From what I am gathering
from this forum it seems that we are all expecting the PVR /NT version to
really shine while also having the best price/performance ratio. However I may
have to wait a while for a Pal version to be out.
BTW What business are you in and what do HTH and \X/ stand for ? (g)

FWIW, if I remember correctly the Targa 2000 only has a resolution of 640×480
which is not broadcast quality.
