Mike, >> I need to integrate a 3D Rendered object into a photograph, and have the 3D objects shadow fall over objects in the photograph. There's a tutorial on how to do this, (or similar), in the 3D Studio Special Effects book by New Riders Publishing. John

ok… I don't have the book, can you give me the general idea? Mapping the background onto a 3D object wont work because of the extreme perspective. Duplicating the objects and assigning a grey transparent material wont work because the geometry is too complex. -MM

Mike, >> ok… I don't have the book, can you give me the general idea? << hey, buy the book you cheapskate! I bought one of yours <g>. The chapter John is referring to was mine in NRP's "3d Studio, special effects" and is far to involved to describe in a posting on the forum. However, I'll give you a couple of clues to work on. You'll need stand-in objects which represent the objects in the photograph which you want to have the shadow cast on. This is usually a ground plane and maybe some walls etc. You make all these objects pure white. Make your object which will cast the shadows a matte object and shine a very strong light on it. Use the resultant images as a matte in video post to cast shadows onto the background photograph between the fully rendered shadow casting object. There's quite a bit more too it than that, but I'm sure you'll be able to figure it out from there.

Hey Martin! Long time, no seeum. >hey, buy the book you cheapskate! I bought one of yours <g>. Hehehe, how's about I give you a buck and you tell me. Thanks for the tip. However, it's pretty depressing that the Yosters havent come up with a better solution for this, as Topas has. -MM

Mike, >> Hehehe, how's about I give you a buck and you tell me << that's a generous offer and far more than I'll get from the sale of a book 🙁 Every time a book sells I get exactly ….. $0.00. >> However, it's pretty depressing that the Yosters havent come up with a better solution for this, as Topas has. << I kindof like things convoluted ….. keeps the mystery in the art <g>.
