What do you know about the OMNICOMP board that's always advertised in BYTE and Windows Sources – it lists OPENGL and INTEL 3DR and autodesk 3-D studio as the stuff that it accelerates. Thanks, John

I think I have seen the ads, but you are the first person to even mention it to me. – Dan / n-Space, Inc.

Dan or John, If I may jump in here. I went through the same search recently. I have a fax here from Omnicomp talking about the board you're discussing. In the ad, it list the 3Demon board as usable with 3D Studio. When I called and talked to them directly though, this turned out not to be the case. The explanation was, it is not that the board doesn't work with 3D Studio. It is that 3D Studio does not work with any of the acc boards. Just before I bought my system, I asked Jonas if it was true that there were no accelerator boards that would work with 3DS. He answered, this is true. I spoke to Chris Smith at Omnicomp, and Joy Li, at ELSA. Chris told me that when 3DS R5 is released for NT then thier boards will work with 3D Studio. How they know this, I don't know. I was also told that ELSA's Gloria board will work with 3D Studio now. The fax I received from them stated that it has AutoCad drivers but nothing specific about 3D Studio. When Jonas told me that there were none…I kind of lost interest. I have the contact numbers for all of these places if you are interested. Terry

Very interesting – we do alot of waiting around for 3DS to render – and even on Pentium 90's you wait. I think the only way they're going to catch up to SGI is to massively support multiprocessing, port to the power PC, mips and alpha, and make sure there are many hardware accelerator cards to increase the speed. How fast is the ELSA over a 64-bitPCI VGA card do you think? Does the ELSA accelerate HOOPS?
