Need help with Chaos. I transferred my files to a new hard drive. When I try
to start program I get a message: MetaShell is already resident. This is
followed by "MetaGraphics not installed. Aborting." and the program aborts.
I tried re-installing the program from the original disk but still get
the same message.
Any suggestions?
Albert:
I moved your message to Section 8 which is specifically for Chaos.
On your system did you simply add a new drive and still have the old
one around? Is the old drive your C: drive and the new one with
Chaos D: drive? Have you deleted all traces of the original install
from your original drive? Any and all pointers to the new location
would have to be changed. If there are path statements in your
Autoexec.bat or related files or references in Windows .ini files
these would also have to be corrected.
I do not have any expertise in Chaos but I'll do what I can to get
you the help you need. Let me know how your system is configured and
we'll start there.
Bob,
Sorry to take so long to answer, but I've been away. (And going away
again tomorrow! No wonder I never get caught up!)
The new drive is the C-drive and my old drive is now D-drive. I
reformatted the old drive before re-loading Chaos onto it.
Could the fact that I boot from C, but have Chaos on D be the problem?
Note: I just tried to load Chaos on my LapTop which has never had Chaos
on it. It loaded ok, but when I try to boot the program I get a message: "The
packed file is corrupt. Error: metagraphics is not installed. Aborting""
Guess my original disks must be damaged. I wonder if I can get a
replacement.
Albert:
Have you checked out the Chaos.zip file that was mentioned by Brian Rudolph?
Also check your autoexec.bat to make sure the path statement points to the
correct drive letter if it references chaos at all.

Hi Albert,
<< Note: I just tried to load Chaos on my LapTop which has never had Chaos

packed file is corrupt. Error: metagraphics is not installed. Aborting"" >>
That error message is caused by an incompatibility Chaos has with Dos 6.
Please get the "CHAOS.ZIP" file from the HChem/CA Lab library. It has a
section on how to fix the packed file corrupt message.

Albert,
Download CHAOS.ZIP from the forum libraries. This answers the metagraphics
question, as well as many others about CHAOS.

" When I try to start program I get a message: MetaShell is already resident."
MetaShell is a TSR launched by Chaos. Chaos thinks that something is present
that looks metashel. It generates the first message. Then it tries to start
up and lo! Metashel isn't loaded!
Certain DOS substitutes might do this, or a virus checker in the bootup. Try
booting plain (no autoexec or config) to see if I'm correct. Narrow down the
problem to an individual file in the bootup and see if you can change it.
Good luck!
