#3DS GURUS, HELP!!!
27 messages in this thread
Hi, my name's JD and my video production company is evaluating 3DS to
use for some animated effects. Currently we have version 2.0. Please
help us with the following questions: 1) What is the latest version
of 3DS? 2) How much does it cost? 3) Can we get a discount by
upgrading our current software? 4) Is there a version that takes full
advantage of the Pentium chip? 5) Is there a version that takes full
advantage of the PowerPC chip set? 6) I the answer to 4 and 5 is no,
what is the most powerful set-up (IE OPerating system and hardware)
to run 3DS? In the PC world and otherwise. 7) Does anyone know
qualified 3DS artists/animators in Israel? Please reply by e-mail to

>>latest version<< 3DS R4
>>How much<< Retail US$ 2995
>>discount by upgrading<< Yes, price depends on version, etc.
>>full advantage of the Pentium<< It runs very fast on a Pentium, but I'm not
sure if it's been optimized.
>>PowerPC version<< No, it's dos only.
A good setup would be a Pentium 120 with 64m Ram, more ram if you are
rendering very large files. There is also a render-only version that runs on
SGI machines.
There are some forum members from Isreal, I believe. 3DS is sold only through
Authorized Autodesk dealers, so check around your area.
Good luck

In addition to Ted's response it would be worth noting that in the
first week of August the next release for 3DS will be announced.
There is little known at this point about the product except that the
release will be for Windows NT only. Stay tuned to find out about
multi-processor support, DEC Alpha support and OpenGL support among
other compatibility issues. No ship date has been announced for this
new release but a target date will probably be forthcoming at the
product's unveiling at SIGGRAPH 95.
Hmm… do you have any idea just WHEN the formal unveiling will occur?
I mean, is it just going to be there when the exhibition opens, or
are they going to have a special time where Gary or someone stands up
and makes a speech inviting people to come by and see it?
We've got 3 15-20 minute demos of 3DS/NT that we'll be showing in a
presentation at our booth. Together, this 45-60 minutes of
exposition demonstrate a good cursory overview of how it works
(although it actually takes more like 8-9 hours for me to give a
really thorough demo of the program). In between these three demos,
we'll be showing 15-minute sections of our demo reel. So, if you
were to get there for demo1, and stick around for about an hour and a
half, you'd see most of the demo reel and all of the NT demos.

Apart from the videos is there any chance of taking 3DS NT for a
ride?

I'll bring my most comfortable old armchair and setup camp.

The demos we're doing aren't videos… they're live demos. (ie, Jack will be
explaining what I'm doing, and I'll be pushing the mouse around)
Autodesk will have a VIP suite set up somewhere off the show floor, so that the
press, etc will be able to actually play with the thing.

ASOFT'ers are VIP's too, no? <g>
Bob Bennett, Garth Chouteau and Kevin Blaker run that room like the Mafia.

hehe, didn't think so. :^) Oh well, not even sure if I'll get to go in the
first place. Still scheming though. 🙂 I'm anxious to see your new toy.

We're anxious to show it. (9 days and counting)
Hope to see ya there.

Hope to be there.

Once 3DS/NT has been revealed at SIGGRAPH and the cat is
out of the bag, is there any chance of getting some screenshots
uploaded for those of use who can't make the show?
We're definitely going to be uploaded a bunch of docs about it, and I'm working
on getting final approval to upload some screenshots as well.

Gary,

How about uploading some stills and animations that were done with r5?
Mark
I'm sure that we'll get around to that later this year. Since the program
isn't shipping until this winter, we've got plenty of time to tease ya'll.

Does this just start as the expo opens, or is there any kind of formal
introduction when you first start running the stuff?
Btw – is the final form of r5 set, or are you possibly going to add or tweek
features after the reaction from SIGGRAPH?
We'll probably start the day with the first video reel, so you've got until
about 10:15 until Demo#1 starts.
Re feedback… we're always open to feedback.

Unfortunately I won't be able to make it to Siggraph this year. Is it possible
to get a copy of the Demo reel? I was amazed by last years reel. Thank you
Richard Petersen
>> Is it possible to get a copy of the Demo reel?
Gary posted a message a while back that tapes will be available for those who
send a SASE. He will post an address after Siggraph.

I look forward to getting a copy of this year's demo. Sadly, my version of
last year's demo never got mailed to me. You said copies of this years', as
well as the electronic theatre stuff, will be at the party?
Yup. Everyone who comes to the party will get a 50-minute-long compendium of
the best 3DS material we could find, from all over the world.
I think you'll find it quite inspiring. (I did.)

I can hardly wait. Actually, I hope to be part of next year's tape (still too
green for THAT level <g> )
After seeing this year's you'll be very very inspired.

I shope so. I need to pull a demo reel together to get some business so I can
quit the job I'm at (which doesn't use any graphics). It's the old catch 22.
If I were doing 3DS full-time, I'd have plenty of great demo material, and
getting more jobs would be easy. however, not having a demo reel I'm QUITE
happy with yet (perhaps I'm my own worst critic), I need to work at another
type of work and don't have time to do 3DS full time for a demo reel that
competes with the best out there.
Gary,
Any news on when the people who got on the reel will be notified?

>> do you have any idea just WHEN the formal unveiling will occur? <<
I can only speculate and this will no doubt land me in hot water but I can
tell you what happened last year. Last year there was an official media event
which gave out all details to the media and specific invited guests whoever
they might have been. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, I think this event
occured on Monday night at the Universal Studios theme park just before we got
free run of the park for the night. At about that same time Gary uploaded to
this forum a product announcement which included a TENTATIVE feature list for
the next release. We were all able to see the new release in action at the
Autodesk booth on Tuesday. I have no idea if a similar scenario will play out
this year, Gary may or may not be able to tell us more as to what events might
be scheduled. So at the latest you'll see the new release on the trade show
floor on Tuesday, August 8th.
