i've rendered under msdos. some month ago i installed the os2warp on a hpfs-part. and now i found out…: if i render the file xxx under dos it needs 53min p/frame. if i render the same file under os2_warp it is ready in 17min !!!!!!!!!!! under dos the p90/32mb have to handle 3ds4, only. under os2 something more – but it still much faster. why??? wfg -micky also <midroth@ibm.net>

I'll pass your message to QA, and ask them to see if they've heard of this. Thanks for letting us know; hopefully someone else with your experience will explain what's happening.

one thing i forgot in the hektic…:) i have real 32mb on board. the dpmi-switch of the 3ds4-dos-session is 128mb. if the renderdatas are bigger as your ram (meshdatas, calculating lights, shadowmaps etc.) and the pen beginns to swap out, the performence-winning comes… rule: so long your file is not bigger than your ram…it's look like same. but if your file is bigger than your ram – you'll win time 'til 1:~4! … -micky

The HPFS (file system) combined with the OS/2 paging system, which uses native 386 page tables, provides a vast improvement for 3DS files that exceed available RAM during render.
