#3D programs

I am writing a program for the Amiga to convert 3-D objects between the proprietary formats of Sculpt 3D, VideoScape 3D and Forms in Flight, three animation and modeling programs on the Amiga. The program will convert data between several other formats in neat-o ways. Does CAD-3D dominate the Atari 3D market? Should I convert objects from another program, too? Also, who maintains a good collection of public domain CAD-3D objects? I'd like to get in touch with them soon. I've read the docs that Hudson wrote in DL 12. Is there any example source code out there, too? I've already converted his descriptions to C, but would love to cross-check my work. (I am already seriously considering porting this program to the Atari ST and Mac… and reading the most popular Mac formats for 3-D objects. Any suggestions?)

John, I can upload a test file for you with some simple objects in it, like cubes, spheres, etc. if you like. CAD-3D is the only commercial 3D program for the ST, I believe. Some of the drafting packages may support some sort of 3D file format, but I'm not sure. I've got a zillion 3D objects, and will be happy to upload some for you.

I've grabbed several files from DL 12 already, so I have enough 1.0 and 2.0 test data. Do you have a pointer to an explanation of the color map data in the file? I'm not familiar with the Atari ST's systems for color. I didn't realize you are a SYSOP here, Tom, it's good to know where I can find you. 🙂 Meanwhile, could I pay you to copy your disks of objects for me? I can read Atari format disks on the Amiga. It looks more and more like I might need to buy an ST system, just to test this.
