#ZOO Trashes Disks

I'm having SERIOUS problems with ZOO. Actually I'm not positive that it's
ZOO, but it only started happening after I was forced to start using ZOO, and
it happens 95% of the time from within a ZOO X.
What happens is, for no apparent reasons, after several ZOO X's I get "Disk
Corrupt Task Held." I have reformatted those disks and have the same problems
after subsequent zoos. Eventually it causes other parts of the system to go
down. It happens constantly.
I usually have ZOO going on in the background, that shouldn't matter should
it?
When I rebooted this time, I got this message: Error Validating disk
AmicData. Key 65280 out of Range. Disk may be corrupt. Does that help any?
Are there known problems with zoo?
I don't understand why anyone would ever use zoo if it behanves like this.

What version of ZOO?? and are you using FFS??

I haven't seen the problem that Henry has had. However, in my testing of ZOO
2.0 (the most current version that I know of) it works properly in
decompression with FFS but does not compress properly. I haven't see it take
out a disk, tho.
Oh I didn't even know there was a zoo 2.0 Maybe that fixes the problem.s
Version 1.71 of ZOO, and I don't have a hard drive – I'm using standard 1.2
stuff.

I've heard of this problem before and apparently it messes with the disk
structure in such a way that it is still unusable even after being
reformatted! I don't understand how this is possible but was told that
once it happens your only course of action is recover what you can from it
then throw the disk away! -msl-
What do you mean "it messes with the disk structure"? Zoo? Please tell me
what you know in a bit of detail, as I've been pulling my hair out for the
past couple of days.
Fortunately I *SEEM* to have cured the problem. I ran INSTALL on all of my
disks, AND threw the bad one in the trashcan. Neither TCELL nore VIRUSX
said I had a virus.
Now, whether I had a new virus that I killed by Installing things, or if
that disk that was really bad off that I threw into the trashcan was
somehow messing up the OS by just sticking it into the drive, I dunno. I
kinda wish I'd done first one thing then the other to find out, because now
I'm a bit in the dark as to what the problem was. And that makes me feel
ignorant of the situation. And that makes me feel powerless.
Zoo does not 'mess with the file structure. It has a bug that isn't the
fault of the author. It's a bug in the scdir() function in Manx, which
fails under FFS.
This doesn'y answer your other question, but then there are an enormous
number of ways a disk can get screwed up and trash things.
A bad disk CAN guru your machine – in fact, it will do it nearly every
time. Most frequent cause is having taken the disk out before a write was
finished. If the disk is just not validated, the Amiga will validate the
next time you put it in, but if it senses that the disk is bad, you've had
it! Promise is that this will be repaired by – are you ready? – 1.4!!!!
