I don't know what you do for a living, but I work in a computer store. I
regularly watch new programs come in. Known pirates come in. They look at
Stargliders II, and because they cannot copy it yet, (and may not be able to
for a week or two), they buy it. If it were not protected, they wouldn't buy
it. They would find somebody else who did and copy it.
Same goes for high end products. I don't know of a single pirate who has
Superbase Pro. Could it be the dongle? Possibly. I don't know. I just know
that there are other databases that are inferior to SBPro that pirates use.
Some people even ask me if a program is protected. As I said earlier, we rent
software. I've had people ask me if they can pay the rental fee and copy the
program in the store, to save them driving home and back with it.
You're probably thinking that we shouldn't rent software, then. Well, 3 other
local Amiga stores rent software. If the guy can't pirate it off of us, he
will do it off of somebody else, and we won't even get the rental fee. We were
opposed to rentals until everybody else jumped onto the bandwagon and our
customers weren't bothering to come back.

It sounds like the reason you like CP so much is that you're able to make
money off of it. I'm not going to even get into the "They do it so we have to"
except to say it's a pretty poor excuse for indirectly supporting piracy.
The fact that they do buy it merely means they have the bucks at the moment,
and are heavily into instant gratification.
If you think someone who's into piracy and wants a $100+ piece of software is
going to go "Whoops! Copy protected! Dern! Means I'm going to have to buy
it!" you're fooling yourself.
And if you want a broken copy of SBPro; there's this guy, see… Copy
protection may not be totally useless, but it sure is close to it.

Not to mention that it raises the R&D cost for the software for all the honest
customers out there…

Local pirates have SuperBase Pro and homemade dongle. In fact one person
said to me "give me $1.50 and I'll make ya a dongle. Take me maybe ten
mintues."
