I agree totally. Sysops are not gods (he said while glancing for the
bolt of lightening..)
My point is not opinions. My point is this: I want the Amiga to be a
powerful & accepted computer in all fields that it can be.
I think the membership of the forum would have no problem agreeing with
that. If so, then why not use our numbers to get software companies develop for
the Amiga.
I don't personally need a 3D Animation program. But I want more!!!
Because if there is more, there will be more people using the computer. A
bigger base. A bigger base means more power to get others to develop a program

I think we have a real need for people to develop whatever programs will get
the Amiga into schools, colleges, business offices, art studios, television
stations, and other such places. It is a wonderful hobby machine, but it is
NOT *JUST* a hobby machine.
A copy of the English AMIGAUSER INTERNATIONAL came today. It had a long review
of AmiExpo in Chicago – stressing the productivity software shown there and
the fact that most attendees appeared to be serious users of the Amiga. It has
a section on the educational uses of the machine, with information about the
way the Amiga is being used in various English schools and colleges. I would
like to see more of this kind of coverage. (The magazine has the usual game
reviews, hints, etc., but they always cover the more serious users as well.)

I went to the one in Chicago and was not impressed in the least. There
was the guys with the puppets, the guys dressed as doctors, kids going up to
vendors and asking real professional "What's the highest score" questions,
seminars that were suppose to tell you HOW to do things but instead told you
what products are out there (not even how to use those!)
Needless to say, it was interesting but not worth going out of the way
to see.

multiuser for me. Let me know if the conference will be saved. I would love a

I see problems with what you propose. Not the generality, but the specifics.
If Ashton Tate were to do a 'WordPerfect' on us by bringing out a clone of
bDasewhatever, it does not do the Amiga a service. on the contrary, though it
may bring the Amiga into businesses, it does so under false pretenses. it
brings with it the mistaken impression that it is yet another clone, running
the same old dreary software. Under those conditions, I don't want to see it
happen. I would sign a petition to ask A-T to NOT port dbase to the Amiga.
Rewrite perhaps, but not port.

That's short sightedness. Just because a program runs on two different
computers doesn't make one a clone of the other. While I agree a straight port
from the MS-DOS world to the Amiga world isn't the best approach, it does allow
users the option of running established professional level programs on a
different machine. And if the users see that it runs faster/better/cleaner or
whatever on that different machine…then we've gained another convert.

OK….So if there was not a Word Perfect, Do you think we would have an
Excellence now? Maybe in a year or so….MAYBE.
I agree whole-heartedly that I would prefer a product like Dbase to be
re-written utilizing the capabilities of the Amiga. HOWEVER, even a port would
draw the attention of other people wo would then say " I can do this
better..watch this!" and develop more databases.
Meanwhile, Amiga (via CIS even) could go to Lotus and say "Hey guys, how
come AT & Wordperfect are writting for us and you're not?". This in turn would
"pressure" Lotus ever so slightly to at least look at the machine. Maybe they
would do a port or maybe they would see the machine for what it is and do a
complete re write. After Lotus, who knows! There are TONS of companies left!
The end result is that we have a slew of GOOD databases AND a great
reputation. The Great reputation means more good business stuff. This means
more users, which in turn means more graphics, games, EVERYTHING!
But the REAL QUESTION (addressed to the sysops on Mount Olympus 🙂 ) is
this: Why can't there be an automated vote system to get some companies going
on development? This would help in a number of ways:
1) More stuff developed possibly
2) More recognition for the Forum here on CIS
3) A Broader (yet) user base on the Forum
I really don't see any problems with this. A question a month on startup
is not that terribly expensive to anyone for the benefits!!!

there is an interesting discussion on Excellence in AmigaArts – subject 11 –
Word processing/desktop publishing. This section was recently added – if you
are using Whap! you MAY have to delete your AmigaArts.SEC file (though if you
downloaded 1.3 then you won't have to.)

I'm not sure there IS a "why can't there be". I imagine it's technically
feasible. Remember, though, sysops are very un-different from the forum
members. We have additional capabilities and responsibilities, but that's it.
We have no ability to write or modify system routines or specifications. The
only input we have is suggestions; exactly the same input the forum members
have.
I think a nice automated tallying system would be nice. And I believe it's
been suggested before. I would recommend you GO FEEDBACK and leave a brief but
detailed message on what you want and why you think it would be beneficial.

I know for a fact that when the Amiga was in the development stage CBM offered
Ashton-Tate a sum "in six figures" to do a DBase program for the Amiga.
Ashton-Tate turned them down.
