I just bought a new modem. The Supra 2400. It's like
lightning compared to my old 300 baud acoustic coupled monster.
I have had a couple of problems though. I logged onto a local
BBS and downloaded a file at 2400 using Xmodem on a VT 100
emulator. I was so shocked by it's speed that I timed it-10
X-modem blocks in 6 seconds (to RAM:). That was fine, next I
headed to Compuserve, I got a "CONNECT 2400" when I logged on,
however when I tried to download it was averaging 10 X-modem
blocks in 12 seconds. Half the speed of the local BBS. I've twice
repeated logging onto the local and then Comp with the same
timing results-it's as if the downloads were only occurring at
1200. Any reason for this?
Ben, are you out there? This has to do with CoComm. I can't
log on at either 1200 or 2400 baud. I set the baud rate, get a
connect, enter my number and password, the copyright message is
displayed, then-_nothing_. Its as if the machine locked up, but
it hasn't. If I hit return or ^C the "SD" and "RD" flash, but
that's about it. Everything works fine at 300 and I can operate
normally with the VT-100 emulator. Any ideas? One last thing,

CIS is a packet-switched network, and protocols such as Xmodem do not behave
well over them. I suggest downloading one of the terminals here that have
either B or QB implemented. QB is _remarkably_ faster than Xmodem, and very
well behaved on packet nets.
Also, your node may only be 1200 baud. GO NODES and use 2400 baud as the
search criteria for your area code. It may mean switching phone numbers for
2400 baud.
As to terminals, you'll find Access! version 1.4 and CoComm, both of which
have QB, and I _highly_ recommend you check out Whap!. A faster modem is half
the battle in keeping costs reasonable, and using Whap! will make a _huge_
differerence in your online costs.

Thanks, Doug. I am using a 2400 baud phone #, but I will check again. I'm only
making a comparison with Xmodem because I can't get past the copyright message
using CoComm! I'm using it now-BUT at 300 baud.
