#1Mb Agnus Compatability
10 messages in this thread
Does anyone know of any incompatabilities between pre-rev 6.x A2000
motherboards with the 1Mb Agnus? Based on the date that I bought my
machine, I suspect that it has a 4.x motherboard. The local dealer said
that if I had a pre 6.x board, that my board would have to be upgraded. Is
anyone familiar with this, or has anyone heard of anything to this affect?
I'll know later this week what rev my mother board is when I install the
2Mb memory expansion. If there aren't any incompatabilities, I'll probably
install the chip myself. The software I'm running is DPaint III, Photon
Paint 2.0, DigiView Gold 4.0, Pixmate 1.?, DigiPaint 3, and Transfer 24 (a
DigiView subset). Are there any problems with any of these packages with
the 1Mb Agnus and a 4.x A2000 motherboard? Let me know.
Thanks, Paul
Paul,
Some early revision motherboards have had problems with the 1MB Agnus
modification, some have not. I've got a 4.1 motherboard with the 1MB agnus
installed, works like a champ.
Try it… see if it works or not and go from there.

John,
Thanks. I'll take a look at my motherboard. Hopefully I can get away with
doing the installation for about $100 instead of going to the shop.
Paul
Paul,
I don't think looking at the motherboard will solve your problem. Talk
to your dealer, have him install the chip and then test out the system. If
it works he'll be happy with the sale and you with your 1MB CHIP. If it
doesn't, have him work with you on a fix and pay the 1/2 labor for his
time.

Paul,
Some 4.x boards needed to be upgraded, some don't. I have had a 4.2 board
work fine with a 1 meg Agnus, but had to upgrade a 4.3 to get it to work.
The upgrade is relatively simple and takes 30-45 minutes.

Greg,
What do you mean, the 1Mb worked with a 4.2 motherboard but you had to
upgrade to a 4.3? Did you find some incompatabilities even though the 4.2
board appeared to work properly?
Paul
No, it was a 4.2 motherboard that worked fine before the 1 meg upgrade but
had strange problems after. Doing the few small changes that comprise the
upgrade procedure fixed the problem. I am not talking about changing out
the motherboard, just doing the mods.

I installed the 1meg agnus on my rev 4.2 A2000 with no apparent ill
effects. I installed it myself and made no alterations to the motherboard
except to cut one jumper trace. I was able to run dpaint iii and photon
paint.
Dan,
Thanks for the info. In my t-shirt business, I depend on those two
packages A LOT!! Knowing that they work properly with the 4.2 board and a
1Mb Agnus takes some worry off my mind if I have a 4.2 board. The shop
said that there were some questionable incompatabilities, but they didn't
go into it. From the sounds of all the replies I'm getting, it sounds like
they may be either forcing the upgrade issue, or trying to cover themselves
in case the 4.x board doesn't work with the new Agnus. I suspect the
latter.
Paul
Dan,
Didn't you also have to move a jumper, in addition to cutting the trace.
