Yikes! It's the CompuServe Kops!
When I just asked it to upload the latest Silicon Valley DEC PC users
group newsletter (available soon as SV0790.ARC), I got the message:
Under our Agreement and Operating Rules, you must own or have sufficient
rights to any information you place on the Service.
CompuServe then agreed to accept the upload, but not before sneering a
bit and giving me a suspicious glance. OK, OK, we know what the rules are.
But next time when I sign on, will CIS warn me that I'd better not be
harboring any unclean thoughts? And will I get frisked?

Speaking of rights, I just tried to register my PKARC and they sent the
check back! "We have developed _ALL NEW DATA COMPRESSION UTILITIES_ … We
regret we can no longer accept your registrations/orders for our previous
software utilities." One account I heard (on this Forum) of the PK-SEA
lawsuit was that SEA was supposed to get the money PK received for PKARC.
Guess not! PKWARE has a new address too…

I think SEA was supposed to get the money PK received for PKARC *as of the
time of the settlement*, and was henceforth enjoined from "selling"
ARC-based utilities… which would jive with the letter you received.

Brian – Send your money to the new address and ask for PKZIP. Also, there
is a neat utility around here somewhere that will convert all of your ARC
files to ZIP files. The "self-extracting" feature of ZIP, plus the faster
execution and smaller files, make it The Only Way To Go!

Dennette: Your enthusiasm is infectious, but I'm using PKARC to send files
to and from a Sun/Unix system that has an ARC utility compatible with both
SEA ARC and PKARC. If I got ZIP I'd end up having to use the ZIP/ARC
conversion every time I sent a file, and I doubt I'd save much time doing
that! As to self-extracting, PKARC 3.6 claims to do it, though I've never
actually tried making a self-extracting archive.

I originally heard the following at a DECworld a number of years back.
Since DECworld is happening as I type… and since the incident you cited
took place… the following modification/corruption seems appropriate.
(Substitute "Digital" for "CompuServe" to get the original.)
Q. What do you call 100 CompuServe lawyers at the bottom of Boston harbor?
