after years of fighting it, i find i must start using C so….
how about some recomendations for a compiler on the Amiga?

Lattice C 5.05 is VERY popular. It will be called SAS C in the next
version, but SAS has owned the company for quite a while.

ahh yes i keep reading about it and Aztec but does anyone around here want
to voice reasonable arguements for or against both?

I doubt that it is possible for anyone to give reasonable arguments for and
against both. Which compiler you use is pretty much a religious issue, and
very few programmers find it very easy to be calm when discussing their
relative merits. 🙂

so far the only religious fanatics assaulting me have been those who
actually like C as a language once you get past that they've been fairly
reasonable to deal with ('course they do KNOW that the compiler they use
is best but they generally put up decent examples of why it's good even if
the direct comparisons are limited)

From a religous fanatic: I use Aztec 3.6a because I like to use in-line
assembly language. That was the determining factor for me in the
Lattice/Manx war. I do have the 5.0 upgrade to Aztec, but it is giving me
errors on my assembly include files for my in-line portion. Haven't had
time to check it out though, so I'm still using 3.6a version right now.
SDB with the Aztec version is nice and helpfull. I don't really know about
Lattice since assembly was an overriding factor in my decision……8)
thanx so far the Aztec followers have been presenting me with better
reasons while i like assembly myself my main reason for moving to C is to
be able to poke around at home on stuff i can then take into work so one
of my main criteria is something easily portable to an Intel machine
does Aztec have any history with other platforms?
Our primary compiler products are our Amiga, MacIntosh, and PC C compilers,
as well as embedded system's compilers. We have other compilers too which
at one time were big sellers, like our Apple ProDos and CP/M compilers.

It's also true that any Aztec C function is portable to your other
compilers, too? I.E. You can readily port an Amiga source to Mac or DOS
systems? Also, thanks for your informed answer, I remember seeing it in
the manual but it's always *very* nice for someone in the know to respond.

Within reason, yes. However, don't expect highly machine specific routines
like the Amiga resident library stuff to port readily.
