#Internal clock problem

My battery backed-up clock seems to have died on my 2000. I've had it for
about 2 years- is this about the life-expectancy? Do I need to bring this
in for repair or is this something I can do myself? Thanks for any help.

Mike, if your error message says something like "Battery Backed-up Clock
not found" it is very likely that there is nothing at all wrong with it.
There is a test bit in the clock that sometimes gets flipped when some
program goes astray. With that bit flipped, the Amiga cannot find the
clock. The SETCLOCK program that came with 1.3 and the Enhancer 1.3 does
not properly reset the clock for you. Use either the 1.2 version of
SetClock or the 1.3.2 version (from library 15 here) and do a SETCLOCK LOAD
and SETCLOCK SAVE. Should work fine then if this is the problem.

Geez, that was quick! The error message is exactly as you predicted
"Battery Backed-up clock not found." Will dig out 1.3.2 and see if that
setclock will remedy the situation. Do you know offhand how long a battery
should last? Do these things generally just fail all at once, or will they
gradually go out of whack by keeping poor time? Mine went all at once at
sure seems strange as my machine isn't that old. Thanks a bunch !! You've
helped me at least half-a-dozen times, appreciate it.

I'm no authority on those batteries, but I've never had one run out. I
suspect that they will last the (expected) life of the machine, all things
working well. I've read of a few people having to replace them, but this
is rare. In nearly all cases of the clock just stopping, it has been
caused by this flipped bit. Those having to be replaced have been in
clocks that run, but do not keep accurate time.

Well I finally got it to work. I was all excited when you
mentioned the 1.3.2 setclock and dug that out, but it didn't do the trick.
But just now I see Greg had left you a message concerning using "reset" as
the command and sure enough I now have a clock. Thanks again, and thanks to
Greg for noticing the problem.
