#Upgrade Amiga 1000?

Hap,
One critical question that I haven't seen addressed in any responses is one of
software. Not knowing which software package your dad has used to setup his
system, you must check to see if it will run on OS 1.3 or 2.1. There is VERY
little currently available in that type of productivity software for the Amiga.
It has pretty much evolved into a video/graphics machine with software to
match. There are a couple of good wordprocessing packages available and a
database or two. I'm not sure about spreadsheets.
Anyhow, before looking seriously at anything new I would suggest that you find
out if:
1. his software will run on the newer machines. Take the floppies to
a dealer and try them on an A1200.
2. see how he feels about reprogramming his package onto a different
software setup (if one is available).

Does the A1200 allow you to boot with the older kickstart disks as the A3000
(and maybe the 4000, not sure) does? I have them back to 1.1, and if ArcticFox
won't run on an A1200, then I just won't upgrade! 🙂
Don't upgrade. You must have 3.0+ KS to work with a AA system.

ArticFox? That didn't run even with 1.2, if you had fast ram. I can't
imagine that there is a way to get it to run on a 1200.

Yep, you are right about that! However, if the A1200 will allow you to load
and map older KS to ram, the chances of compatibility do exist, although
remote…. (I think I even have a copy of KS 1.0 around here someplace!)
I run Arctic fox under 1.3 on a 2500/030 – no problems at all. I "kick
back" to 1.3 (which I captured onto disk out of one of my 1000's) using
utilities I got from the libraries here, in fact. To kick bck, I just use
the SetCPU command (also from the libs here).
I wouldn't be the least surprised if a 1200 with an 030 could run
Arcticfox under the saame kind of conditions.
A stock 1200, of course, lacks the MMU (thanks again CBM for another
brilliant decision – not) so cnnot pull the same trick.
But most accellerated Amigas can.

Interesting. Is is running with fast memory present? My copy died when I
got a memory expansion for my 1000.

I'll have to try using 1.3 to run it… being exceptionally narrow- minded
about these things… I assumed that since it died under 1.2 that 1.3 was
seriously out of the question…
The machine in question has 8m fast and 1m chip. It's also an 030. Works
just fine.

it runs fine on my A1000 with 2.5 MB of fast ram present. Now if I
were more coordinated, I'd still be playing it <g>.

I tried running it on 1.3 today, and I can't get a thing out of it…
BTW, is there anyway to read back up a "thread", 'cause if this isn't a reply
regarding ArcticFox, I'm gonna feel REALLY dumb! <g>

as I recall, the command is rp, but I'm not exactly sure as to the
exact command nomenclature. If you type help, or go to the Practice Forum, I'm
sure you can find out the exact specifics.

There was an update version of Arcticfox… the originl will NOT run. Was
scrounging around at home this evening and found the original version disk
– which in turn made me recall why I have a 1.2 version Arcticfox (FOR
1.2, the AF game itself is version 1.2). It didn't work for me, either.

Ahah! So THATS why yours runs! I got that program the first day it was
available- my dealer had it Blue Labeled in- so I have the initial
version. Never heard of an update before.

Dynamix did a pretty good job on Stellar 7, but it lacked a lot of the really
cool features in ArcticFox. The way S7 works, you can't really operate
tactically… it's just B2theWall, blow them away… if you actually take your
time, and think out your moves, you can do some SERIOUS damage to the bad guys
in AF before they catch up too you… if your patient!
What ever happened to arcade games that made you think…. <sigh!>

Arcades have a special field generated within them that stops all upper
brain functions…. this way you dont realize how much money you have
spent till your half-way home.. its the place where 'time is money'. the
effects are also directly proportional to age- as my gaming reflexs slow
down my ability to mindlessly shove dollars into the change machine have
increased amazingly!!!
but i still love it!!!!

VIC-20! (Yep, been that long!)

Being new to CServe, what is the fastest protocol I can use? (I'm currently
using Terminus until I get my A1200 up and running for AP.) I've been using
YModem-G since I have an error correcting modem, is that the best I can do?
