Does the Amigas use a proprietary monitor? I have a Thomson UltrScan that
I've used for 320×200 – 800×600 with RGB,RGBI,RrGgBb and Analog RBG. If I
ever did go and get an Amiga I'd like to know if I could save the cost of
the monitor… Jim

I use a very inexpensive Thompson monitor on my 2500/30, but I did
have to have a special cable made up for it. The Thompson you have should
work, with the appropriate cable.

Analog RGB is the default out of the Amiga. Your UltraScan should do fine.
As I recall, it also has VGA, et al, capabilities, so you could use it
with the 3000 in its new video modes as well.

Amigas just love multiscan monitors, but you will probably need a special
cable. You can get the pinouts and make one, or just order it from Redmon
Cable.

If you have an un-flicker-fixered Amiga, you will probably want either
the Commodore monitor (1084S) or a multisync if you plan to get a
flicker-fixer. If you have a flicker-fixered machine, you probably want a
VGA monitor, although you might want a multisync for backwards capability.

do I need it fixed?' …

The stock AMiga modes will work just fine with the RGB capabilities on your
UltraScan. You may need a special cable, but they are readily available.
The highest resolutions on the Amiga use interlace (which is why they are
so easy to hook cheaply into video equipment). On a normal Amiga system,
this will cause a flickering screen appearance when output to a monitor
with the high definition of most computer monitors. Folks who like to work
in that mode all the time often get a gadget called the Flicker Fixer
(that's what I have at work driving my NEC 3D). The flicker fixer has it's
own monitor outlet, and will drive a multisynch in VGA mode. The Amiga
3000 has a device similar to the flicker fixer built in, and gives you a
choice of getting montior output in vga-style mode with no flicker, or in
interlace rgb for use with video equipment, just as if you had a flicker
fixer on board.
So, my set-up at work has a genlock for video work on the rgb port, and an
NEC 3D on the flicker fixer port for my computing work, to get to the
bottom line. but, the NEC 3D (and your Ultrasynch) could also be driven by
the RGB port.
