#SuperVGA in XT BB???

My friend is trying to use a SuperVGA (8bit 800×600, $80 with switch box
and cables BTW 🙂 board in his A2088 (XT BridgeBoard). At first we didn't
know how to make the BB "recognize" the VGA card instead of the builtin CGA
emulation. I found a jumper that "select" the default video mode
configuration and we set it to "none" hoping that… well you know. Now we
get a "Can't find library" requester… But janus.library is in
SYS:Expansion right where it's supposed to be. What other library is
there?

I believe that with most PC's (IBM) you'll need to alter the CONFIG.SYS
file in order to get the video board recognized. All that I've installed
I've had to anyway. Did you do this? (the video card manual should say
what to do….)

The video card's manual says that it "Auto Configs" for VGA. Alterations
to CONFIG.SYS are required only if something other than VGA is preferred.
(Note: The above info is second hand from the owner after I asked the
very same question. I will ask him to elaborate/check again.)

"autoconfig" VGA cards sometimes must be able to detect an operating
monitor and interface; so if you're on the Amiga screen (using a
switchbox), they will not detect a monitor! You must switch box to the
VGA's cabling during bootup in this case. >> Ron Legro / Milwaukee
My Willow VGA didn't need that.

Nice to know. It's been over a year since I installed a VGA card, and all
I remember was that I always had to carefully select both dip and
config.sys file options. Was just trying to point a 'potential' problem
out to the fellow.
Is the Willow VGA the one that has NTSC out as well? How does it look?

Mine also auto-configed with no problems.

Yes, it is NTSC as well looks just fine in RGB on the 1084 (except the top
line in 640 X 480 gets chopped). Composite's ok, but not great.

Thanks. I was considering getting one for my Dad, who has a clone and
always wants to do titling for his home videos. Has been shooting off the
screen so far! Figure that a reasonable video card for him might be a good
thing.

What version of the Janus Bridgeboard software are you using? I have an
early version of Janus 2.0 that has a setup program for selecting monitor
type and I select off for both. Then I open the monochrome pc window
anyway, shrink it to its smallest size and leave it in a corner. I use a
SuperVGA monitor. To enable the PC, I click in that shrunken window and
the PC VGA monitor should show any text you type after that. Good luck.
"We" too have Janus 2.0. Are you using this software on the A2088, as we
are? I am aware of SETUP.EXE type programs for '286 based computers but I
was under the impression that '086/'088 based computers had to be modified
at the motherboard level. Perhaps the setup program you described is
something particular to the BB senario… I will have him look.

The program I am refering to is the PCPrefs Icon/application which gives
you a choice of Mono Video, Color Video (I set both to OFF) and the
location of the RAM at A000, D000 or E000. Select E000 for XT BB. Other
than that, I suggest that you try the diagnostic that hopefully accompanied
your SVGA card. Also, they sometimes have program check to see if the
revision of your BIOS chip will support the extended video modes. Check
these out and tell me what happens.
