Gary, have you seen our 2.1 manuals?

Nope, I'm fairly PgS illiterate so far. I'm still using PPage (hey, I've
written MIfont to support it, I might as well use it! 🙂 though I'm getting
more and more interested after hearing stuff about PgS here on CIS. Must
pick up a copy soon…
I've seen the PPage docs (obviously) and the Saxon docs and can't say I'm
terribly impressed with either, though I'm very sympathetic to large
productivity program developers; it's probably impossible to satisfy
everyone, manual-wise. There's just too much to say and people want
information that will enable them to set the Guttenburg (sp?) Bible after
using the software 10 minutes. I remember leafing through the 5 (!) manuals
that come with Quark 3.0 and thinking to myself "But all I want to know is:
how do I type in a line of copy?!? That's all I want to know!". It's funny,
I recently received a call from a customer who said, in one breath, that he
thought our documentation was magnificent but he couldn't understand a word
of it! What do you do when someone says that? Pack up and go into
veterinary medicine, I should say. 🙂

When we did the 2.1 manuals we looked at all the mac and pc manuals
(skipped the amiga and atari manuals) and tried to decide what was best
about each. The writing of some mac manuals is superb, but as you mention,
the new user doesn't know where to start since there are about 20 things in
the box. So we tried to take the best features of Mac documentation and
bring it to the Amiga. It worked pretty well.

When I first read the Amiga PgS 2.1 manual, I thought it had been written
by a professional tech writer. Tech writing is a profession and an art
which has been largely ignored and forgotten in the software explosion of
the last decade. I don't really mean to criticize, but people who write
code are often the worst at testing it or describing it, _especially_ in a
competent, literate manner. It takes a combination of style, engineering
knowledge, and _impeccable_ language syntax (hmmm, much like code itself).
Keep up the good work!

I have to Agree, I though the manuals for 2.1 were some of the best I've
seen (from a novice's perspective). They got me up and running in minutes.
I feel very easy with alomost all of PageStreams functions. I do wish some
places were a bit more technical but over all it's a great piece of work.

If you have suggestions for the manual, please email them to this account.
(Email is better than posting it here because it will be captured for
printing.) We are always interested in improving the manual. One thing I
would like to add sometime would be a reference chart to show which text
attributes are imported with text from each file type.
