#upgrade for A1000

I have an Amiga 1000 and wish to upgrade it a bit. It has 512k and I want
to upgrade it to 1 meg at least the only memory upgrade that I've been able
to find ( in magazines ) is an "insider II" board. If anybody knows
anything about this product I would appreciate any info you might have it,
i have no idea whether it's any good or not or whether there are any
alternatives available. Also does anyone know if it's still possible to get
a hard drive for a 1000.I'de appreciate any advice or ideas, thanks.
I haven't had any experience with the Insider II board, but I installed the
Insider (original model) in the A1000 about four years ago. Worked like a
charm and the extra Meg was wonderful (I think the II version holds 1.5 or
2 meg).
The only problem I had was that the board was too long and one of the disk
drive cables tended to press up on the board, causing it to creep out of
the CPU socket (causing Gurus). I added another CPU socket to the MB on
top of the soldered in original to raise it higher and that helped.
From the pictures of the II, it's a much smaller board (now only needs 8
chips I think thanks to 1megx1's prolly) so it shouldn't have that problem.
I recently installed a new Spirit board for a customer and it too was
smaller. Installation was easy and it worked well in the shop.
He is reporting gurus now using Excellence!, but then again, he's doing
some ram hungry pages showing all his fonts. Could be running out of
memory (he's getting illegal address gurus).
Then again, before the Spirit Board installation, Exellence! wouldn't even
boot on his system!

I have an old A1000 with an Insider. This gives me a total of 2M (.5 chip
and 1.5 fast). I installed the board myself; it wasn't overly difficult
but I've been messing around with boards and drives for a little while.
I've been very pleased with the board. Another benifit of the Insider is
that it adds a clock to the A1000. A little thing but a nice one all the
same. If I can provide any additional info, let me know.
Regarding your question about a hrad drive for an A1000, the problen is the
interface. When my old Pheonix bite it, I decided to upgrade to an A3000
instead of messing with the A1000. In your case, you might want to check
out something like the SCSI adapter that plugs into the parallel port; it's
something that I had considered. Maybe someone else can give you some info
on it.
