Is anyone here using AmiDock successfully?
(For those who are not familiar with AmiDock, it provides you with
immediate access to program icons without having to enter
drawers/directories. e.g. one could have WP, Whap, DPaint, etc. icons
immediately available. No more opening the hard drive icon, opening your
"Comm" drawer, then opening your "Whap" drawer, then double clicking on
"Whap!". Just click on one icon which is already on the Workbench screen.)
I find it works like a charm with some programs (e.g. WordPerfect, Whap,
PageStream2.1, MaxiPlan, LCD Calc). But I also find that I can't get it to
work with others (e.g. Access!, NComm, ClickFAX, Browser)
I'm using version 1.4.2 of AmiDock. I'd like to become a registered
shareware user of AmiDock, but I want to make sure it works with the
software/hardware I want to use.

If you need any help with AmiDock, this is the place to ask questions.
While it is not a Soft-Logik product, it is written by one of our
employees. It should be compatible with all Amiga software (except CLI
scripts in the latest release I believe.) Some programs refuse to run from
it in CLI or WB mode. Try the other if it won't work. Ensure you have the
stack size set correctly in AmiDock. It is used by all Soft-Logik employees
for everything.

Question: isn't there a capability in AmigaDos 2.0 that is similar to
AmiDock? ie. it allows you to put icons for your programs in a drawer
different from where the program is, so that you could just have all your
program icons in one drawer?

No. You can however leave your icons out on the desktop so that they are
not in any drawer.
This feature however only applies to WorkBench programs, AMIDock can launch
CLI programs as well. Plus all the "Icons" are all the same size and
arranged neatly.

Thanks, that sounds very useful. I'll have to look for it – and see how I
like it. (sounds great with a superbitmap WB …. put all those icons out
of the way in the right – a quick slide of the screen, and there they are!)

Yes, you can put your icons on the WorkBench permanently, but AmiDock
collects them all in a dock — you have to try it to see why it's
worthwhile.

Thanks for the tip about trying both the cli and Workbench options for
the AmiDock Add/Edit screen. I tried that with ClickFAX and with NComm and
they both worked. It looks like I'll be registering another shareware
product. It sure is handy having all of those icons on a Workbench screen.
BTW, any word on a PageStream printer driver for Black Belt's ClickFAX
yet? Any response to my earlier question about PageStream not using the
"approved" method for creating multiple page .ILBM files?

I have one question about AmiDock and 2.0. I tried to run ProWrite from
AmiDock and ProWrite cannot find the ProgDir: assignment.
I realize ProgDir is new to 2.0. Is the problem because AmiDock is not
launching 2.0 programs correctly? Do you know if this is fixed in the
registered version?

I had the same problem with the ProgDir: assignment. I solved it by
putting an assign in my S:User-Statup file.

That works, but only for one application. Fortunately I only have one that
has the problem, so maybe I should just break down, make the assignment and
forget it. I keep thinking that I might be causing problems with that kind
of system wide assignment, as ProgDir: is supposed to be a local assignment
for each WB application, at least I think it is.
I wish I understood this ProgDir: thing a little better.

How does one get Amidock to open the Shell instead of the CLI?? I've tried
to edit the CLI box and I either crash my machine, or it works once then
stops calling shell windows. I'm very frustrated.

Here's my AmiDock setup:
I choose edit from AmiDock menu, choose CLI and here is what I have filled
in:
PATH SYS:System
NAME CLI
ARGS
STACK 4096
WorkBench is checked (Versus CLI)
Now, my SYS:System CLI info is this:
WINDOW=CON:0/150/680/292/SHELLNAME
Try this and see if it works. By the way, I'm using WB 2.0. What are you
using?

Craig,
one caution on Donovan's advice. Since your using 1.3 you'll have to
change a few things. First, check your PATH to make sure that it is
pointing to a drawer that contains the SHELL icon. Second, in the WINDOW=
statement, it should be WINDOW=NEWCON:…. since 1.3 uses the NEWCON device
instead of the CON device with the Shell.
BTW, I haven't got the faintest idea what AmiDock is, but I saw those
two glitches.

I don't understand your problem. I have AmiDock open my Shell. Ensure you
are calling the right file.
What program should amidock call up? Please give me your Amidock shell
Edit informatiion. Mine only calls up CLI's

I DL'ed Amidock about a week ago, and it looks very nice. Everything seems
to work perfectly so far, except for one thing. Apparently the program
comes with a setup for NEWSHELL from the C: directory. When I click on the
NEWSHELL icon in the dock the first time I get a new shell. However, if I
try to click on it again, the hard drive is accessed but no shell appears.
When I get this to work properly, I feel certain that I am going to
register the program too, because it really is a timesaver, if it just
wasn't for this one problem. Anybody got any ideas how I can fix this?

I'm not sure what the problem is, but just delete the CLI entry, and re-add
your proper shell.

I already tried that. I have my shell on the root diectory of the HD at
the present time. I loaded the dock file from the shell (workbench Icon),
and it still doesn't work twice in a row. Now if I try to use the CLI, it
works as many times as I want it to. One other peculier thing. I said
that trying to use the Shell twice in a row doesn't work and this is true.
However, if I boot up the system, and then push the shell button it will
work. I type ENDSHELL and lose the shell. Then if I try it again (push
the SHELL button on the dock) it won't bring up the shell. However, I have
also put a CLI button on the dock, and if I push the CLI button, and then
type ENDCLI to lose the CLI, then push the shell button again it will work.
Hey, I don't know if anyone else is having this problem, but it is kind of
frustrating to me. I never use the CLI anymore now that I have the SHELL.
BTW, this may sound like a very dumb question, but you DO realize that
there IS a difference between the SHELL and the CLI, don't you?

This is the EXACT problem I'm having as well. I want a Shell not a CLI.
I've gotten mine to work once. But once you exit it with a endcli thats
it, you aint getting it back.
