#Whap! at 9600 baud

There was some discussion about using Whap! at 9600 baud and I didn't catch the results. Is it worth using 9600 to skip from forum to forum to collect messages or is the "overhead" a killer? All my message stuff has been at 2400 baud and I've been using 9600 for downloading only.

Thanks for the input. Do you go to several forums per session or do you mainly just go to one or two forums to collect messages. Generally, I vacuum up headers for about 7 forums in a call and I wonder if the "overhead" (time it takes to switch fora, get logged in, search for messages, etc.) doesn't kill some of that savings.

Leslie, I visit the 4 amiga forums and the aviation roundtable so I guess that is 5 all together. By no means do I visit every section in each forum. It use to take about 15 min to do what I do at 2400 and now it takes around 5 min so even though the cost doubled, the time on line decreased by 2/3 rds. I hope this helps. Thanks for the feedback, John. I'm going to try 9600 baud and see if it helps lower my bill.

My I butte in? I'm so jealous! So far my modem has clicked off 5 times in mid session, clicked off just as CI$ answered, and hang at Easyplex. Every time I log on I see a message asking about an old message there and I haven't been able to log on manually to fix it. And just tonight it insisted there was no prompt defined in another forum and wouldn't accept anything from me. It doesn't seem that much faster, but I'm so nervous it's going to act up I can't really judge. GRACIA – and you think YOU'RE lost!!! – via Coolwhap

Gracia, Go into your drawer where WHAP is and you will see some files at the bottom that have a T as the 1st letter (T9600, T2400) etc. Delete the one that says T9600 and then log on with whap. It will reset all your settings for 9600 operation and should correct your problem. JOHN – The Lost Southerner!!

Leslie: I've been using 9600bps exclusively for the last few months (almost a year I think), and my bills have either stayed the same, or gone down some. It's well worth it to use the 9600 for everything but COnferences (there 300 baud seems to be the best choice), as everything is much faster, and there's hardly any difference in cost (at least that I can see). -Mike Schiller In sunny Fort Lauderdale

Thanks for your opinion. I'll give 9600 baud a try. Too bad my Supra can't hook to CI$ at 14.4K baud! THEN there would be NO question.

Leslie, For me, using 9600 saves money. I've not seen delays like some folks over in other fora see (they claim 1+ minutes).

Hm. I've occasionally gotten waits of 1+ minutes at 2400 baud too.
