INTERESTING NEW DEVELOPMENTS & TIDBITS ————————————– AM-Report News Snippet 1) Commodore's new Amiga 600 comes equipped with a PCMCIA card expansion slot. 2) Fujitsu, one of the world's largest manufacturers of PCMCIA cards, just announced a price reduction in their PCMCIA cards — making them the cheapest on the market. 3) Fujitsu doesn't sell to the general public — only through large distributors and VAR's — one of their largest is Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC). 4) Commodore just signed an exclusive national distributor agreement with Merisel. Experts predict this alone will net Commodore over $20 million in revenue next year. 5) DEC just signed a national distributor agreement with Merisel. 6) Commodore has announced signing a reseller agreement with DEC. 7) DEC is the fastest growing PC vendor in the U.S. and has been for the past two months. DEC has grown faster and more consistantly over the last 6 months than any other vendor in the industry. This from a survey of over 27,000 corporate computer buyers conducted by an independent company. 8) DEC is big, very big, in networking and communications. 9) Commodore's SANA-II networking standard has reportedly been (finally) finalized. With the exceptions of #1 and #8 (and possibly #9), all this has taken place within the last 30 days. Depending on the details of the agreement with DEC (nothing has yet been released), Commodore *looks* like they are making the moves necessary to start playing ball with the big boys. Make of what you will. [Looks like the WOC/A show in Pasadena will be very interesting.l

DEC just posted a fourth quarter loss of 1.85 billion. They've reduced thier workforce by 23000 in the last 3 years, and expect to layoff 15000 more this year. Overall I'd say DEC picture isn't too bright. Dean DKB Software

Phooey! Remember last year? IBM posted almost a $2 billion loss and laid off thousands…Apple posted a loss in the hundreds of millions and laid off hundreds…so did most other big companies…Commodore was one of the very few to post a profit last year. DEC is just doing now what IBM, Apple, Wang and others did last year. There was a $1.5 billion one-time restructuring charge in DEC's loss, similar to what IBM and Apple had. (Heck, IBM is *still* offering "early retirement" to darn near anyone who'll take it.) DEC is the second largest computer manufacturer in the world (after IBM) and the largest supplier of networked computer systems and networking devices for computers. They just changed upper management and are instituting a cost-cutting and "down sizing" plan very similar to that of IBM and Apple. DEC's financials are nothing to get worried over — it is an industry phenomena not peculiar to DEC. What *would* be bad news is if they didn't react to it…but, they did. -Chas
