I was reading Appendix C of the 3DS2 manual and it suggests that I contact you to find out about getting the IPAS reference and sample code. So, how do I get it? Thanks, Chris

"The IPAS developers kit is not available yet." Thought I would save the Yost Group the trouble of responding. As far as I know (which isnt much) they are due mid August? Maybe? -MM

Chris, If I understand your question correctly, I believe the current estimate for shipping the IPAS routines is now "sometime in October." I don't work for Autodesk, the Yost Group, etc., but I did overhear something to this effect at the Autodesk exhibit at SIGGRAPH yesterday. FWIW, Lee

Just got back from Siggraph and the MTC managers meeting. Too bad you were not there, I was hoping to meet you. The new demo tape is phenomenal to say the least. Some outstanding animations. The Autodesk booth (as far as I could tell) was always full, and Gary and the rest of the METS team sure had their hands full. I would also like to personally thank Grace Gallego and Wayne Hodgins from Adesk for organizing an incredible managers meeting. I expect good work to come from this group. Also, You should have seen the Siggraph party on Monday night. Wall-to-wall people. Great show! -Kevin

I only made it for the exhibition hall on Wednesday. Gary's new tape is superb! He demonstrated a few of his new IPAS routines (e.g. "glows" for starlike objects, ripple deformation effects, etc.). Very nice! Gary's finished around 20 of the 30 routines he hopes to have ready for shipment sometime in October. I was impressed. Lee

Lee: Thanks, that was the question that I was trying to ask. It sounds like you got to SIGGRAPH this year. I didn't – how was it. What was this year's "hot topic"? (SigGraph usually seems to have one topic that seems to be big. A couple of years ago in Dallas it was facial animation, for instance). How was the Autodesk et all exhibit? Chris

Chris, I'm afraid that I'm not in a position to reliably report to you about this year's "hot topic" at SIGGRAPH. I live three hours' drive from Chicago, and merely spent one day walking through the exhibit area. I didn't really have opportunity to converse much with anybody else there (except company spokespersons at the exhibits), so I can't tell you much more about the prevailing mood at this year's SIGGRAPH. I thought the Autodesk exhibit was one of the most impressive ones there (though several others were larger or more superficially imposing). Autodesk's featured three distinct sides with several different product demonstrations going on at once. The largest of them was a repeating showing on a large video screen of Gary's impressive new 3DS2 demo tape. In between showings, an Autodesk spokesperson would conduct a live 15-minute demonstration (on the same screen) of a sample 3DS2 session. Gary Yost was doing his own (more advanced) demo in a separate cubbyhole of the Autodesk exhibit. He was always surrounded by onlookers and consistently fascinating. Other sections of the Autodesk exhibit featured the company's Autocad release 12, their molecular modelling software, etc. Overall, I thought the exhibition area was interesting and impressive. Sorry I can't be of more help. I'm sure other more involved attendees will share their insights here in the very near future. Lee

Chris, there is no firm release date set yet for the IPAS kit. The closest I can get is sometime before the end of the year.
