in their new catalog dak has a cd-rom player for sale for $199.99. its an
ms-dos type. is there any way to make it work with an amiga 2000, i have a
gvp series ii board with a scsi controller. The cd-rom is high sierra type.

I'm pretty sure that this drive is NOT SCSI. It comes with an adapter,
and they don't say what kind, but I believe it is a proprietary kind. You
can call the 800 number on the catalog and they will tell you whether it
is SCSI or not. I suspect you might be happier with the SCSI CD-ROM
drives that are advertised in our classified section by Gary Hobish. His
price is not much higher, and we know they are SCSI – and also know they
are from Toshiba.

That DAK CD-ROM isn't SCSI, so it won't work with the Amiga. However, last
I knew, DAK was selling the NEC CDR-80 for $229, and that one _is_ SCSI.
(It's not in their catalogs, but they had it in stock.) And it's MUCH
faster than their $199 caddyless thing.
if i were to purchase the nec what would i need to do to make it work with
my 2000?
You'd need a CD-ROM file system. I know of three: CDROM-FS, ASIMware's
CD-ROM file system, and Xetec's. The Xetec and ASIMware offerings both
come with Fred Fish CDs, and support the Macintosh HFS as well as Amiga
and ISO9660 formats. Last I saw CDROM-FS, it lacked HFS support.

I have the latest version of CDROM-FS, and you're right it doesn't support
the HFS filesystem. Has anyone done a review of all three filesystems
comparing them to each other? Sometimes I get the feeling that one of the
other 2 might be better than the CPR product.

Check out my article in the August AmigaWorld! Although it's not a review,
I di discuss the CPR and Xetec drivers. (I still don't have a final
AsimWare driver, but it worked OK even in beta.) I'd say the Xetec package
is the best bet: for $50, you get the driver, two CDs, and CDTV and Mac HFS
support. What more do you want?
I have both the ASIMWare and the Xetec packages and I find that I use the
Xetec software more (although I don't mind having both the ASIMWare disk
and the Xerec disks <g>).
If I were only going to get one, I'd choose the Xetec.
BTW, why doesn't Xetec advertise much anymore? I _never_ see ads for their
hardware anywhere (other than the CD stuff).

I just ordered a toshiba cd-drive, and CDROM-FS, and was wondering
what kind of luck you have had with the FS. Do you have alot of CD's that
work with it? Have you had any problems with it? Thanx for any info !!

I'd strongly suspect they are not SCSI drives. Among other things,
relatively few MS-DOS machines use SCSI peripherals.
