I was at the Philadelphia Amiga Users' Group meeting yesterday (aug 8). The nice thing about this group, is that a number of members work for GVP. They were there demoing a new graphics board. FANTASTIC ! (EXPENSIVE !) This board is fully programable in any graphics resolution. And programable to any bit level, number of planes, etc., up to a limit, (I forget). The board uses a device independent graphics language, and unlike other boards which rewrite what is in the Amiga chip ram and copy it to the video, GVPs board redirects the video altogether, basically bypassing the custom chip set, and making it instantly compatible with anything that uses Commodore libraries. I believe they are also making their libraries available to developers for free. The A2000 they were running had an '040 board in it, which was required for this graphics board (it is a daughter board). Once it was explained that they were using their own board to do all the video, I asked what exactly was the Amiga doing ? They said it was an inside joke at GVP that the A2000 becomes a power supply. The only thing the A2000 was providing was power, ROMs, mouse and keyboard interrupts. After the demo, I hinted at the idea of GVP producing an Amiga "clone", they apparently had all the know how already. They said they'd need the O/S, to which, I replied that they could use the Amax strategy. They didn't bite. It would be nice to get an Amiga laptop though, and if anyone could do it, I'm sure GVP could.
