3DS will probably never do ray tracing. But you ought to try out Big-D.
Very nice ray tracer.

Sorry to jump in here with an ignorant question, but what is the advantage
of ray tracing vs. what 3DS does?
Curious, Chris Barnes
Chris:
The main advantage is totally accurate reflections and refractions. The
main disadvantage is speed.

Ah,
I am not convinced that 3DS will *never* be able to do ray tracing. I
think that at some point IPAS and some nifty programmer will be able to
implement selective object ray tracing.
Guess I've got to just hang out for awhile and wait for it to happen…

Ah, Michael. You're a very perceptive person. No doubt, as we speak, some
ray tracing expert is hooking up his program to 3DS via IPAS. Still, it
won't be 3DS doing the ray tracing – it'll be an external ray tracer.
Evan
One of the easier routes to getting Raytracing and 3DS together may be
through IPAS extending to the free raytracer POV found in the COMART forum
on CIS. They already have a 3ds .ASC file to POV converter that works very
well. There is also a number of utilities that enhance POV. With so many
programmers working collectively for FREE the POV raytracer will continue
to be enhanced faster then any company owned product. What it lacks in
interface 3ds makes up multiple times. Just a thought. Doug.
