SAS C++?

Hello Doug,
Earlier you mentioned that SAS would be releasing a C++ compiler in the
fall. Do you have any more information? Specifically a date and price.
SAS might also consider collecting some of the usefull PD utilities and
example code for programmers, such as Gadtoolsbox(a Great Tool) and iff
code/libs, to accomany their next release. This would enhance the value
particularily to those of us not programming the Amiga full time. I would
like to see an improved editor. I love the use of color in the Microsoft
Visual C++ and Borland editors. HINT! 🙂 Also a project editor. Eagerly
looking forward to the newest SAS release!

I'd also love to see a C++ compiler. I can totally agree with wanting
the nice features of the PC platform editors on the Amiga. I have to use
Visual C at work and when I get home to work on a machine I enjoy I have
to move backwards in editor features.

Thanks for the input. We'd like to be able to put some work in on the
editor, but it didn't make the cut for 6.50.
We will be releasing 6.50 (which includes C++) this fall. The original
announced date was September, but unfortunately the printer delays are
longer than we expected, and it will probably be October. No prices
have been announced yet.
6.50 will have the following features:
– C++ translator
– C++ iostream and complex number libraries
– C++ support in the debugger
– Instruction scheduler for the 68040 and 68882
– Improved peephole optimizer
– Reworked libraries and startup code
– Improved shared library startup – now you can use the standard
link library functions from within a shared library, mostly
– New GPROF-style profiler
– Font support in SE, CPR, SCOPTS, and SCMSG
– Ability to debug functions declared in header files
– Improved Aztec C compatibility (#pragma regcall/amicall, some lib funcs)
– and more than I can't think of right now…

I also use Visual C++ at work and like the color syntax high-lighting.
Also having "declaration" and "initialization" search macros are handy.

Thanks for the message. On the pricing issue is it worth me buying 6.3
now. I've been meaning to for the past month but have wanted C++ as well
and didn't want to buy SAS C and another publisher's C++ so this is the
answer. 🙂
If I go out and get C what sort of price is the upgrade likely to be?

I really can't discuss pricing until our marketing department figures
out what they are going to do on it.
Of course, the upgrade from Version 5 to 6.50 will be more expensive
than the upgrade from Version 5 to 6.0, but we will charge an upgrade
fee from 6.0 to 6.50 as well; I really don't know which will be
cheaper, going straight from 5.x->6.50 or 5.x->6.0->6.50.

Will the debugger have the ability to dump the contents of the 68882?
What I'm asking is, if I have a floating point number and compile with
-m8, will the debugger "know" this and update the value for example when
I'm doing a watch of the variable? Does this question make any sense at
all?

I'm not quite sure I understand the question. If you have run the
optimizer, the debugger doesn't always know where the value is being
kept; but if you haven't, floating point variables, whether in
68882 registers or not, are tracked just like any other variable.
This is true in the current version, though, so I'm not sure I
understand your real question.

Maybe WHAT's one of the upgrades in CPR? I still don't know what
feature you want to see. Floating point variables are tracked just
like any other variables.

I don't remember what I was asking, and since I've been too cheap to pay
for the registration on AP, I can't go back on this thread. Thanks for
answering (?) though.
Thanks also for the info on SAS C++ as opposed to Lattice C++.
