#Read IBM Floppy?

Folks: I have downloaded several things onto an IBM 720K floppy, and I'm trying to get my A3000 to read the diskette, but it keeps giving me an error message whenever I reference df0: with the IBM floppy in it. 720K is DD (not HD) for IBM. How do I get the files off the floppy & onto my hard drive? Thanks in advance, –Phil PS: the A3000 is configured to run with an AMAX II cartridge, could this have anything to do with my problem?

Philip, If you have WorkBench 2.1 and/or you have CrossDos running then you should be able to access the drive as PC0:, not DF0:. One way to check if the s/w is loaded properly is to insert the disk. If two icons appear, one with DF0:??? and the other with the PeeCee disk name, then it is installed properly. If you don't have some version of CrossDos then you will have to get it or get either the PD MessyDOS or MultiDOS. Hope this helps… Andrew

Andrew: Thanks for the help. I found out this morning that since I have 2.04 software, I can't read IBM diskettes directly. So I bought CrossDOS 5 this morning. The salesman at the store said that this is the *only* difference between 2.04 & 2.1 software — do you know if this is true? In any event, I've been looking for MessyDOS here on CompuServe, but have been unable to find it (I haven't tried to find MultiDOS yet). I suppose that since I have CrossDOS now, though; that I won't need either of the public domain utils, eh? Thanks again, –Phil

Philip, CrossDos is not the only difference between 2.04 and 2.1, but the others differences really won't prohibit you from running software. PCTASK.LZH and IBeM.LZH are in library 11 of AmigaUser, but as you have noted, you don't need them now. <g>

Michael: Thanks for the info! I think I'll return the CrossDOS & order the 2.1 upgrade. I'll also mention it <pointedly> to the shop's salesman. Thanks again, –Phil

I have a file with the differences between 2.04 and 2.1- it is about 40 pages! Major changes were local, the postscript driver, and built in CrossDOS, as well as massive bug swatting and rewrites of C: programs and preferences. There are LOTS of nice changes. But it's true, most software can't tell the difference. // -Karl \X/ Amiga and Autopilot: The *only* way to fly!

Karl- Noticed your message as I was charging through. I am interested in the differences between ADOS 2.04 and 2.1 also, would like to know if there are any significant changes between 2.1 and 3.0.. Just curious as hell. Does this information exist in AForums anywhere? I have the priveledge of having two pieces of software that won't run on the A1200. This even with choosing different boot modes. Thanks- —->Everett, co-pilot of the A1200 on AutoPilot—->

If we don't have the file here, I can upload it. Unfortunently, my copy is crunched, and I don't have a current copy of powerpacker to convert it. If needed, I can upload the file together with a reader which allows printing of the file as well (MuchMorPoPa). I don't know what all the changes are from 2.1 to 3.0, other than AGA support. I don't think there are as many as there were from 2.04 to 2.1. 2.1 was supposed to be 3.0 for the non-AGA machines anyway. // -Karl \X/ Amiga and Autopilot: The *only* way to fly!

Karl- I think the differences from 2.04 to 2.1 are probably the most relevent from the standpoint of whether or not a program designed for a 500, for instance, will run on a 1200. Have one shareware program that is fairly new that won't run on my A1200. Do you know the name and library of the file that gives the differences between 2.04 and 2.1? Thanks, -Everett —->Everett, co-pilot of the A1200 on AutoPilot—->

No I don't, and a look through my autopilot catalog doesn't show it, either. Let me know and I'll upload the file, assuming that the sysops can convert it from powerpacked. // -Karl \X/ Amiga and Autopilot: The *only* way to fly!

Karl- I looked through what I thought were the appropriate locations for the file last night and had no luck. I would appreciate you uploading the file. I intend to study it to discover if there are command differences that would account for the install instructions being inaccurate or incomplete with virtually every piece of software that I own. It's mostly a curiosity thing. Also, I'd told Betty that if I came up with any significant differences between old and new commands I would shoot her a 'for instance or two' to, hopefully, aid with the new APDOCS she is/will be writing. If the correct unpacker exists I would be plenty willing to download it in order to view the file. Thanks, —->Everett, co-pilot of the A1200 on AutoPilot—->

Karl: Thanks for the input! I'm going to return CrossDOS & order 2.1 (and give the salesman some educating). Thanks again, –Phil

Philip, CrossDos is more dependable than the PD version, understandably. Glad you were able to get it to work ok. RE: WB2.0 vs 2.1 on the surface they are the same except for the CrossDos software but there are an number of other enhancements which one may or may not notice. For example, file requestors are considerably faster and I believe there is disk cache for them to increase speed on repeated dir access. The file structure is slightly different with a more Drag-&-Drop interface (ie. instead of having to edit a mount list all you have to do is drop the new device into the devs directory.) If you don't like American english then you can change your requestors to the language of your choice. There are other small enhancements which make the upgrade worthwhile but I don't remember what they are 8^). Andrew

Andrew: Thanks for the information. I'm going to order 2.1 & return CrossDOS to the shop where I bought it (and educate the salesman a little). Actually, I'll probably price software IBM XT emulators & only return the CrossDOS if it costs more than an emulator alone. Thanks again, –Phil
#109532From: Andrew PorterAug 5, 1993 11:08 PM
Philip, As far as I know, except for PD programs, the XT emulator that comes with CrossDos is the only commercial Amiga program. If it didn't cost you that much and you can use the emulator you might consider keeping it. Owners of CrossDos via the WorkBench Upgrade are not eligible for CrossDos upgrades in the future, I believe, nor Consultron special offers, etc. It's also possible that the Consultron manual is better than the 8 pages is the C= manual. But if you don't want the XT emulator then go give your dealer hell and get WB2.1! 8^) Glad to be of assistance, Andrew

OOPs, someone should mention that with Cross-DOS you get Cross-PC, the software emulator. You do NOT get Cross-PC with 2.1. // -Karl \X/ Amiga and Autopilot: The *only* way to fly!

If you want a great PC emulator with EGA and VGA COLOR graphics support, try PC-Task 2.03. It is a bit slow on a stock A500/2000 but it is worth the $35.00 shareware fee for the full version. Also no filesystem required. /\/\ I C |-| /-\ E |_ /\/\ /-\ S T Always on autopilot
