#3000 SCSI CHIP NEEDED
6 messages in this thread
I am searching for a source of the Western Digital 33C93 SCSI chip to replace
the early problematic chip in my A3000 mark WQ33C93A-PL PROTO. Any and all info
appreciated!

Software Hut sells them quantity 1 for less than $20.
What problems are you having?

The problems I have had in the past with this early rev scsi chip have been
rather intermitent (sp?) as I have added things. Inside the 3000 I have 2 HDs,
then I added an NEC CDR-80 in an external chassis, then a MCD-40 tape drive,
then a big Siemens HD. The CDrom drive is the flakiest at that point, not
always reading or recognizing that a disc was inserted properly. I lived with
all that until I decided to move my film recorder to the Amiga and HDs weren't
writting good files, cd refused to acknowledge discs, and the FR locked up
alot.
There is a readme with the Cinelink package (FR driver by Active Circuits) that
tells of trouble with the chip I have, and I saw a post to the same effect go
by on internet so I am under the impression that this scsi chip needs to be
replaced. Agreed? Thanks.

I'm not sure how much difference the PROTO designation makes, but I
replaced my rev 04 WD PROTO with a rev 08 WD (not PROTO) in an attempt to
resolve some problems I was having. I'm under the impression that Randell
has worked around most WD bugs in each rev as they pertain to harddrives,
but certainly once you start adding other devices, it's best to have a
current (hopefully more less bug-ridden) WD chip.

I too would think a later rev less buggy chip will make all the difference. I
have found a source in Wyle Labs, a multi-maker chip distributor. They have
many variations on this chip and the one I think is the latest is the 33C93B-PL
00-04. There is another designation besides the -PL which I think refers to
the package type. Since I am replacing a 33C93A-PL I assume I have chosen
wisely, to paraphrase an Indy movie. If there is anything I should know there
please post!

I got my WD33C93A-PL 00-08 (rev 8) from Software Hut. Seems like you
ought to be able to get a rev 8 part and like it's better than a rev 4.
