I am looking at accelerating my A3000 to 040. Is there any better game than
the GVP card with its $900+ price tag? (Hell, at that price, I could sell the
3000 and buy a 4000) And will an accelerator in the 040 take a zorro slot or
does it go in that one on the other side of the board under the hard drive
platform? On the other points you noted, that was what I wanted to hear,,, that
shadow could now be mapped rather than raytraced. That is what makes Studio 3D
fast. No raytracing.
We've been talking about this on AmigaArts. I called GVP and PPS and
neither are making 3000 accelerators any more. Creative has none of them
in stock any more either so unless there someone has stock or there is
someone else making 3000 accelerators I guess you and I (I also want an
'040) are SOL.
The 3000 has a 'Fast Slot' for accelerators (under the hard drive
platform) – the accelerator doen't use any of the zorro slots.

Bummer! I better start making calls on Monday to see if any of the little
buggers are to be found anywhere. So, from what you understand if I find a
PPS, it won't take a zorro, right?

From what I understand, 3000 accelerators use the 'Fast Slot' not a zorro
slot.

What about RCS? I've heard good things about their Fusion Forty, but they fall
under the "general impression" category. I'd like specifics.

I don't belive RCS makes a 3000 accelerator. Looking at my handy-dandy
AC's Guide to the Amiga I see four 3000 accelerators 2 from PP&S, 1 from
GVP and 1 from Supra. PP&S and GVP don't make them anymore and I don't
recall the Supra ever existing.

Sorry for butting in here but I have just purchased a PPS Mercury 35mhz from
Creative. My understanding is Creative is still taking orders for these items.
Mine took two months from order to delivery date. On the positive side the
SysInfo benchmark tells me that my 3000 is now 1.38 times the speed of an 040
A4000.

I called Creative. It was enough to take my breath away. $1695 (!) for the
Mercury 35 mhz with 4 megs of ram. I will wait until PP&S wises up and runs
another load of them. It is bound to happend eventually.
You'll be waiting an awfully long time…

Well, you are right, I am sure, John, but still Creative has a lot of gall
selling something that they advertised for $899 just one month before for $1695
(albeit with 4 mighty megs added). Kind of reminds me of the aftermath of
Hurricane Andrew.
I think you got one of the last ones. From talking to Creative they just
got a shipment of about 20 a few weeks ago and I just missed out. PP&S is
not making any more so I guess you lucked out! Poor me! 🙁

I've had good luck with a Progressive board in my 3000, but I don't think
Prog. is doing too well lately. GVP is certainly a very good choice. I
used to use GVP all the time when I worked at Alpha Video, and there
support is very good…although you have to use special ram.
The 040 does not take up a zorro slot. there is a special place for it.
