Although I'm not able to attend the SIGGRAPH show I've been talking to many of
these companies with the exception of Truevision whom understandably seems to
have lost my number…he..he..that's another story though.
Bottom Line is…I'm still convinced Matrox Illuminator Pro is the way to go
right now. The other details still need to be worked out as far as Rotoscoping
and use of the Movie-Xpress JPEG cards as well as the DPS product.
I think Steve Ormonde had a good point when he said:
" Remember when VGA to NTSC converters first
came out at an affordable price? The first few out the chute, like the
original Willow and USVideo's, were worthless compared to the ones made
just a year later. Point being, maybe we should stick to todays proven
technology. Just a thought…"
I'm excited about the "Newer items but…."
Here's my Current order of importance:
* I need a good in-house VTR, will most likley purchase the
Panasonic AG 7750 w/AG-F700 Time Code Generator/Reader.
* Add to that the Animation Commander by Drastic Technologies for
VTR Control.
* Absolutly Positivley Purchase the Matrox Illuminator Pro.
* The Exabyte 8500 Tape Drive "External version".
* The ASDG Abekas Driver allowing reads and writes to digital video
tapes in the Abekas Digital Disk recorder Format. See Exabyte.
* Plus some "extra" items such as INSCRIBER titling Software , HiRes
QFX Etc.
Of Course your list may vary depending on your current hardware and software
purchases. I've got pretty much everything else I could ever need. ( I know

You and I have/had similar priorities. I've had a 7750 for what must be about 2
years. Never had a problem. Rock solid product. A friend has the JVC '22
series machine and has had it serviced and recalled in a period of six months.
In January I took the jump to Betacam SP. I bought a PVW 2800 for about
$13,000. MUCH better than any composite or color-under high-band system (like
Hi8/SVHS). More headaches in the area of sync and color framing, but worth it.
I still use the 7750 for dubs for my customers as well as for general editing.
I'd like to get into a video disk in order to speed things up and put less wear
on the Betacam deck. The Exabyte solution is very intriguing, but probably more
for archiving. I rarely need to create D1 product. I personally don't think 3DS
r2 creates images of that kind of quality anyway. R3 is a different story.
What I am looking into, is additional low-cost networkable 486 workstations to
take advantage of R3's impressive network rendering abilities. And I'm always
looking for more hard disk space, but who isn't?

I have a very dear friend in San Jose who does custom build workstations. The
Company is located in San Jose at (408) 268-1033 their fax number is (408)
268-4515.
He does large Government orders Etc. So if you catch him at the right time
prices can be very very good.
He likes to use a Lot of Made in The U.S.A. Parts because of the Government
stuff so its always very high quality components. You might want to call him.

Make sure you let him know it was James M. Murphy that told you to call…Who
knows…that might even be worth a couple of extra points off! <g>
Seriously though Ted is a very good person to do business with. I've been
using him for hardware for four years now.

Does HRQFX run on the Illuminator Pro? Didn't think so, unless it's a new
port. I heard that Inscriber was porting, is it shipping yet?

Hmmmm…..Good point!.. I'd have to check with Ron Scott about the HRQFX myself
I was maybe assuming too much here.
I've got a call in to Karen at Matrox so as soon as she gets caught up a little
from SIGGRAPH I expect to be asking her about the Inscriber as well as the DVE
and JPEG board options also.

The last time I talked to Ron Scott, the IllPro Port was on the way. Inscriber
was worked on the IllPro for sometime. Lumena and Tempra Pro are also there.

I've seen ads for HRQFX, and a read a really lame review of it (the reviewer
seemed to like it but didn't do a very good job of explaining why).
What makes HRQFX better than Photshop? Is it that it runs on NTSC output
devices like Targa+? Does it do color correcting for NTSC?

Since I've only read some of the reviews and received the Demo disk as well as
liturature I'm not really qualified to give you a proper answer on
that…..However I happen to know that Greg Pyros does use the HRQFX and would
be very able to address this question. Oh! Greg!! Are Ya Listen'N'. <g>

Yes, I'm listen'N'! But yes and no! I do use and sell HiRes QFX, but not
having used Windows Photoshop, I can't compare them!
Although I would bet that HRQ runs _much_ faster, as should a DOS 386
program vs. a Windows program! Especially when working with large files!
