it'd be a real steal at twice that price, believe me. After seeing some of the
new output and feature set, I'm convinced they could ask for twice as much and

They could do away with upgrades and still sell it. They could charge 4X
current price and I'm sure someone would buy it. Personally, I expected the
retail sales price to sneak up to that of Topaz. I think upgrades should be
in the range of 10% or $300 but considering the list of features and the
networking capability, running in a DOS window, $500 will have good payback for
me. I didn't see any new capabilities on morphing though. This disapointed
me.

Actually, I think upgrades typically go at %15 … which would translate into
$450. That's a pretty standard figure for maintanence/upgrades in the
industry.

You must have missed some of the morphing features, such as morphing
textures and Object Snapshot (take a model in any state in the keyframer and
place a copy in the Editor). Thus morphing can be used as a modeling tool –
use your experiments or accidental "surprises".

Thanks for mentioning those, Kevin. I'm not sure the Snapshot feature made it
into the published list. It was added at the very last minute.

I saw those references but what I was looking for was the ability to morph
between ANY objects, not just those with similar verticies/faces.

Hi there. Know what you mean about morphing. It would be a blessing to actually
be able to morph between dissimilair (try typing that fast 3 times) objects.
SOmeday maybe. But there is a feature allowing you to take an in-between of a
morph and put the object into the editor. There may be a way to get morph
targets from this. Have to think about it some more.

I'm going to think about it after I get it. For now I'm too busy thinking
about how to do it with present software for projects with present deadlines.
Martin – Did it look like the 40% rendering speed increase mentioned by Bob P.
is really there? What sort of hardware were they showing it on?

the rendering speed increase is certainly apparent. Anti-aliasing is ON or OFF,
and when ON seems to be about the speed as LOW to MEDIUM (turbo ON) in 2.x – I
think the Adesk booth was running Tristar 486/66's, although I didn't check
every one. I noticed the anti-aliasing quality to be much improved and the
colour is much "richer".

In addition to Martin's comments just let me add that IMHO r3's new renderer
makes pictures that are nothing short of STUNNING. The new A-Buffer
Anti-Aliasing teamed with Gamma Correction makes for, I feel, real
"workstation-quality" renderings. The demo pics shown by Gary, Jack, and the
crew were GREAT! So it would seem that r3's strongest points are huge
improvements in quality, as opposed to just speed improvements. Put it this
way: with Anti-Aliasing ON you ALWAYS get *way* better looking renderings than
the old Anti-Alias/High mode. And they are about as fast as the old low/medium
setting. This is just real exciting stuff, so excuse me for sounding a bit like
a cheerleader!<g>

Actually, 40% is the nominal rendering speed increase. If you've got any
transparency in the scene, the increase jumps to 100%, and if you've got layers
of transparency covering large areas of the screen, the increase goes up to
300-400%.
