Gary: It was nice to meet you, and the new release looks great (make that fantabulous!) — but all I can do now is sit here and say, "Well, I could go to a lot of trouble to do this, but if I had r3 I could just…"! One thing I forgot to ask you when you were demoing at the booth: I know there are features to allow you to array an object, but what about arraying instances? This is a MUST! If I've got a theater or lecture room (we do lots of schools, and this is from experience) I don't want to sit there and set the snap, instance, accept name, instance, accept name, etc. 100+ times. The array objects thing would work, but why carry all that extra mesh data. Thanks, Dave

I agree with you about how cool it would be to array instances, but we only had time in the current schedule to implement arraying as a modeling tool in the editor… Hey… we had to have something to do for R4! – G

Gary: As much as I'm impressed with 3DS3, I can think of a bunch of things that I'd like to have. How about if I just send you the feature list from SoftImage? Evan

Hey, with IPAS3 as extensible as it is, you can implement all of that dynamics/kinematics stuff right in Studio. In fact, there was a guy at the show advertising a dynamics package that simulated wind, gravity and collision detection that he was developing for Studio (using IPAS3) and Lightwave on the Toaster (using a less elegant, external interface). – G

Hi Gary, WOW. I'm VERY interested in what you mentioned about the IPAS routined dealing with kinematics/Dinamics, Wind, Gravity, etc. Can you tell me who this guy was? i'd appreciate it. Thank you in advance. Alex K.

Sure… Positron Publishing 800/365/1002 (contact Brent Malnick). They'll be shipping the Lightwave module at the end of this year and the 3DS code in the spring of next year. – G

I picked up a brochure: it's called the "Dynamic Motion Module", and it's from Positron Publishing, 1915 N. 121st St., Ste. D, Omaha, NE 68154. Their order number (for the Lightwave version) is 1-800-365-1002. Dave

Well, I guess if you gave us everything in one release, you'd be out of a job, eh? "Planned obselecence"?<g> Would it be possible to implement an instance-arrayer in IPAS? Dave

Yup… it would be possible to do that. – G

Gosh… Looks like I'm going to have to delve into the world of IPAS programming. There's just so much that's possible. Think there's any chance that being a fair-to-midland kind of C programmer would do it? Dave Mennenoh

It's not that IPAS programming is hard… it's just that there are a lot of little things to deal with. If you're a compulsive type, it should be no problem. – G PS: Check out the code in IPAS21.ZIP in DL1… that'll give you an idea of what an IPAS program looks like.

Cool. Now, if I can just justify scraping up the dough for one of the C packages, before Gus & Greg beat me to the punch (not that I would mind, really, although, as it was my idea, I think I ought to get a free copy — Hey! Greg! I see you, you're calling Gus right now, aren't you?). Dave

Dave: >> Hey! Greg! I see you, you're calling Gus right now, aren't you?. He's on vacation, you you have a few weeks to figure it out for yourself! Greg Pyros
