I don't know what went wrong with the install program. It kept putting up
the prompt `must be in a command file' and seemed to auto-insert when it
requested inputs. I agree, it is a stunning package. Makes the 486's at
work look lame (not that they need much help…I am still multi-tasking
with ease on my ancient 500 with OS 2.1 and 3 megs <G>). Thanks,

I just went through the install for MagicWB and it went reasonably
well. As far as I can tell, the "must be in a command file" is an
AmigaDOS error, but I can't find any reference to it in the manuals. I
would suspect that one of the List LFormat commands in the install script
is generating an error when executing the generated commands (it writes
them to ram:mwb). You could conceivably go in and look at ram:mwb, at the
time of the error, to see what commands it is attempting to preform. Just
a thought.

Knowing how to fly, thus using AutoPilot
Downloaded Magicwb..unlucky though, the file was corrupted. I used XYPR
DOWNLOAD protocol to ram: it is the only protocol I seem to be able to use
other than Xmodem, which is even slower. I don`t know whether I`ll try to
download it again, it is such a large file, that I may be throwing good money
after bad!!

Are you sure that the file is corrupted? I couldn't get this file to
unpack properly with the included LHX. I used LHA instead and had no
problems.

Me too! LHx would only unpack a few of the files, while LHA worked with no
trouble at all.
Having said that, I wasn't too struck with MagicWB. It is very much a
matter of personal taste, and the only way to find out if you like it is
to download it!

The icons are pretty nice but you really got to be sure you have an
interlaced display and probably a palette adjustment. I put it on the
machine at work since they like that type of thing but at home, I don't
really use icons too much and I like the way things are setup now.

I dont know about LHX, I just clicked on the UNPACK MAGICWB icon,it got half
way through the 183 files without any trouble, then the remainder just wouldn`t
unpack, all gave a "unable to open output file" message.

That's the problem. The unpack magicwb calls the included lhx program
which doesn't decompress all the files. Use Lha instead. Once
decompressed, I had no problems with the install program.

Well, this time, as I had trouble with clicking on the UNPACK MAGICWB icon to
decompress, I tried using LHA to do the job, and it seemed to work. However,
there`s a lot less files, than when I unpacked with the unpack option. Is this
OK? And I still don“t understand about LHX!

Did you unpack MAGIC.LHA using the -x switch in LhA?
This switch keeps the directory structure of the archive intact.

Do you have AmiBack? I downloaded MagicWB and filed it away on 2 disks
courtesy AmiBack, I'll mail 'em to you if you want, I live in the UK so
you could have 'em by Tuesday… (If you don't have AmiBack and still want
MagicWB I'm sure I could un-arc it onto disk for you..)

I would firmly suggest getting a package that supports the CompuServe
B+ protocol. B+ at least allows you to resume a download if things crap
out for some reason. Backtalk is one such package and is available here.
At least it would get you to the point where you could download AutoPilot
as well as MagicWB. Both highly recommended.

I have been considering changing my package, so I`ll follow your advice. I
already have AutoPilot, but I have to get around to installing it, no easy
matter for a nudnick like myself.

print out the document file and follow it exactly. If you run into any

Just installed MagicWB and it went without incident. Easy, intelligent
installer routine that made wise allowances for my current system setup.
The only thing I had to do was reboot. I use a deeper than normal screen
and I had to readjust that, as well. No biggie.
In brief, I am stunned! MagicWB makes non-AGA systems look nicer than
color Macs or Windows! I may be spoiled because I have an A2320
deinterlacer card; in any case, the on-screen improvement in icons, fonts
and color rendition is superb. And the default wallpaper for workbench
(the marble backdrop) is the first wallpaper that I thought looked good
enough to use with Workbench 2.1. A real winner! My 20 bucks is headed the
author's way.
Anyone who is unsure of trying this needn't be. The screenshot that came
along with it convinced me to try the install, and I am glad I did. I used
to think tweaking my system in this sort of way was wasteful and
unimportant, but MagicWB is a huge exception. EVERYONE with WB 2.x and up
ought to try this.

Exactly my experience! The screen shot looked so nice, I went ahead and
installed it with not much difficulty.
My WorkBench looks GGGRRREEEAAAT! (thank you, Tony the Tiger).
Now I have to spend the next couple of weeks editing icons, especially the
ones I use in my ToolManager dock window so that everything will be
consistently styled. As a matter of fact, that is why I am trying to get
a copy of the latest version of IconMaster by John Scheib, because I will
be doing a LOT of icon editing for awhile.
