Emilio, The IPAS developement kit is the C libraries and rules/guidelines for writing each of the four IPAS program types. Manual explains the data structures available to your IPAS code and how to access/modify it. The kit is fairly cheap. The expense comes from the requirement that you use either MetaWare's HighC or Watcom's C language AND the PharLap DOS extender SDK kit. PharLap was offering their SDK kit and MetaWare's HighC for around a grand. In that PharLap is the software used by 3DS to access all your extended memory so wonderfully, PharLap, and those two specific compilers it works with, are your current choices. It is an expense, but I must admit the MetaWare code screams. With the new classes of IPAS routines available in V3, I would guess that the IPAS devel. kit will soon be updated. Don Hanson

Dan, As soon as I learn what version of the Phar-Lap linker will work with the IPAS developement kit. We have two ready to go and more in pipe-line. Now that everyone's back from the show I expect to be getting some ansers from the gods of knowledge. Don Hanson

Dan, I noticed that I've got some new email from you, but you'll have to give me a couple of days to get to it. There are about 60 pieces of email AHEAD of you that I've got to deal with FIFO. Tomorrow is Compuserve email day, so with any luck I'll be there soon. Thanks, – G

Hi Gary, Like your last message said, I know that you have LOTS of mail to go through, but I need help ASAP. I have an animation that needs to be handed in, and I can't get my computer to render a frame without rebooting my computer. I had heard about this before, thinking it was an isolated case, but now it's happening to me too, and I don't understand why. I even have the area of memory blocked out "device=C:\DOS\EMM386.exe X=A000-C7FF" Now, I'm using DOS 6.0 and HIMEM.SYS If you know what's going on I'd surely appreciate it if you'd help me out. Thanks in advance. Alex

Alex, I don't think I've got an email waiting from you… (I've got a couple from Dan, tho.) If you're having a problem, this is the first I've heard about it. Have you described this problem in a note on the forum somewhere? It sounds like a hardware problem, which would require a complete listing of everything in your operating environment. – G

I think there were things about DON'T USE DOS 6's MEMORY MANGEMENT STUFF! Go back to 5, or use a third party memory manager, or none at all. Dave

Just one thing Alex. Throw away your DOS 6.0 copy. Sounds bad but I think that you can send Bill Gates to jail for this one! Seriously, there are no words to describe DOS 6.0. Ana

Well in that case, that's what I'll do. hehehe. I wish they would actually own up to their mistakes. Microsoft is a great company that puts out incredible applications, but once in a while they should be humble enough to accept that they fouled up on an application… especially when it's as important as DOS!! (g) Ok Ana, thank you again, I'll talk to you later. Alex K.

Ana – This one about DOS 6, is one I have been missing for months. I have two of the most complicated systems around, and use the disk compression etc. and have had NO problems with the exception that Windows has to have uncompressed disk to virtual cache. Both my systems have clocked considerably faster than the benchmark for DX2's. What's going on here? -JE

hey John! It's just a personal thing between Bill Gates an me <g> There's anything wrong with using QEMM, nut dealing with the new dos 6.0 EMM… that's another thing. I have recieved too many bad reports from "quality" readers to install it on the HD. I'm happy with DOS 5.0 and "6.0" don's give me ANYTHING that I don't have in all the tons of utilities I have… so what I have to look for problems? 🙂 Ana

Ana – I appreciate that people have had problems with DOS 6, I am just really curious to know what the "real story" is. I noticed that IBM has come out with DOS 6.1 Is this like the days of DOS 4. That one was a real nightmare in the beginning. Alot of us stayed with 3.3 until 5 came out. Maybe its a Microsoft Plot to get everyone disliking DOS and moving to Windows NT. Just kidding. But it wouldn't be the first time a big player played games. Microsoft has had alot of time to work out the bugs in 6, maybe one of these days we'll know what the real story is. But like I said it worked great for me. -JE

Ana, PMJI but FYI Autodesk published an info sheet stating specifically that _all_ of their applications work perfect with Dos 6.0. We have all of our machines at work running it and have had no problems. Though we refuse to use Double Space….. Dave

David: The only problem I have ever had with DOS 6.0 was when I used the multiple configuration options. Now, I may have done something wrong (me? nah…<g>) but I had a mess on my hands right away (some of my windows programs started mashing their data files…). Other than that, nuttin', honey. C#

Hi Emilio; I thought I'd drop a note for "your dealer," whoever that may be. Chances are that they are a IPAS dealer of some form and should be able to help… Send us a note if that is a bad answer. Thanks Oma

Thanks Don. But I cannot call you without a number <g>… I have been registered as IPAS third party dev. but do to my unexpected travel I have not been able to reestablish contact with the folks at Autodesk. I couldn't get even my IPAS dev. kit. Can you help with the current numbers to call ? Another question: Is it there a newer version of 3ds than 2.0 ? If so…. What should I do ? Thanks again. Emilio

Emilio, Sorry there, been busy, busy, busy. The lastest most wonderful version of 3DS is 2.01a. It is a free upgrade, available from your dealer. NW Tech: (206) 641-3282. I'm still waiting for my developer paperwork, but we're finally up and cranking. Don Hanson
