I am trying to help a friend with a search for some software. He is an artist who works doing sandblasting onto glass – and recently has started to work on things like vases and goblets. He would like to find a program that will allow him to draw a 2d image and then have it rendered to the shape he is working on. I co-worker suggested that 3D Studio might able to do this. Would this be possible? If so how difficult? Erik is a brilliant artist but not much of a computer techie…

I think this is possible. You can buy some painting software, paint the picture (texture map) and the use the 3D Studio for rendering the vase with this picture. For artistic pictures, the program called Fractal Painter will be the best I think. But the whole job is not so simple. Maybe you will need bump maps, opacity maps etc. It will take some time to learn how to make such 3D pictures.

If you only need to do goblets and vases, then 3d-Studio is the easiest around. All you have to do is draw 1/2 a silhouette and then loft it in a 360 degree circle… it takes but seconds. You can apply virtually any material to it and look at it from any angle or distance. If you are going to need artistic drawings on the vase, goblet, etc… then you will need a 2D paint program like PhotoShop, PhotStyler, or other. Hope I help…
