Striping tape on AG7750

Does anyone know the correct way to black and timecode a SVHS tape on the
AG7750. I thought I had done it OK on a client's machine recently but now I'm
dropping frames and sometimes a frame will get split into two as if the sync
had been lost on that frame. What I did was rewind the tape, running tpclr.exe
which sends clears the framebuffer and then hit the record button. The client
has a targa+ 64 and a diaquest dq422 in a 486/66 PC.
Any hints greatfully accepted.

You have to make sure that the TC switch (in the little "pop-out") is set to
"pre-set" and also I like to record both VITC and LTC (seems to do a better job
single frame with LTC). VITC is turned on in the on-screen set-up menu and LTC
is switched on in the "pop-out".
See if that works.

and then you just hit the record button? Or have it do one long edit? This is

Well, I always have used an assemble edit .. but I'm sure just record would
work as well

Are you sure that they have the TC reader/gen card option? As I remember,
there is a switch on that card …. it may not be set correctly (don't ask me
what setting .. as I remember its pretty obvious).

yes the Ag7750 it has all the appropriates parts, including the Faroudja TC
reader/generator option. I've been on the phone with Diaquest today and I saw
some improvement in the missed frame ratio, but will have to talk to them again
tomorrow since "even 1 missed frame is unacceptable" thus quoth the Diaquest
dude. (FWIW, they have really pleasant tech support and I was able to get
through straight away). It seems to be a persistent problem though and very
frustrating. Thanks for the suggestions.

As I understand it, Diaquest has always had difficulty dealing with drop-frame
code. Is it possible that your tapes were stripped with DF time code. You might
try a V-LAN type controller since it does not impose such limitations. I use an
ANIMAX which is a V-LAN compatible animation and editing sontroller. I have not
experienced any dropped frames DF or NDF. (I also use a Panasonic AG-7750.

interesting suggestion, but changing controller's is unlikely since the system
is a clients, unless the board is faulty, and I'm pretty sure that this setup
should work. The diaquest dq422 and dq422+ (the clients model) in combination
with the Panasonic AG7750 is a very common setup and I, personally, haven't had
this problem before with similar combos.

I had a similar problem a year ago and finally ended up giving up on the wiring
as explained in the diaquest manual. I use the sync out from the targa+ to the
ref sync in on the diaquest. I record black stripe with the blackburst cable
from the diaquest to a terminated video input on the VCR. After recording
blackburst end to end I put the targa+ output to the video in replacing the
diaquest black burst cable. Leave the sync out from the targa+ hooked up to
the ref sync in cable and everything will sync lock. I haven't lost a frame in
13 months averaging 1000 frames per week. James at diaquest tech support
doesn't like what I have done but he can't argue with success. Seems that the
targa+ / tconfig does not operate stable receiving sync from the diaquest,
however the diaquest will lock to external sync very well. It could be that MY
diaquest sync generator is defective but I don't care to check it out because
it works fine in this setup. Try my hookup, I'd be curious if it works for you
too.

I talked to James yesterday and managed to trace the problem to the cables and
too many connectors/converters. One of the cables for ref sync was jury-rigged
and seemed to be causing signal loss (from the diaquest ref sync a bnc to rf
cable, connected with an rf to bnc converter, then a bnc barrel connector, to
the targa+ out sync cable). A real Mickey Mouse cabling setup. I think it's
working now with a similar setup to the one you mentioned. Thanks.

Glad you got it working OK. By your description it does appear that you're now
setup using tha targa sync to lock the system. I wonder why the diaquest setup
described in the manual causes so many drop frames. You notice they always use
sync out from the diaquest to sync IN on the targa. I could never get that
setup to work right.

Since you are being so polite about it, <g> make sure the edit/normal switch
is in the normal position for blacking and in the edit position for
recording.
