Dang! I let the Martian out of the space capsule again! <g>
Lydell
I thought UFOs were scheduled to arrive *every* month!
David!

That's only in Wisconsin and New Jersey.<g>
P.S. Don't forget that's Sector B & Sub-Cluster 2-C.
BTW Just to keep this a legal message Have you used anything other than AutoCAD
to create Architectural 3D Geometry for import to 3D Studio?
Maybe Generic CAD 3D?

>Have you used anything other than AutoCAD to create Architectural 3D Geometry

I have never used AutoCAD to create Architectural geometry to import to 3DS. I
*have* used other programs (with mixed success) to import DXF files from, but
they, also, were not Architectural geometry.
>How cum Ya never asked me what the "M" stood for<
Truth is, I never thought about it. Plus I'd probably have made up something
stupid and spun off into other absurd topics of discussion.
-Something else we have in common- MY middle initial is 'M', also! My! What a
weensy universe!

I caught your note to David Taffet inquiring about importing architectural 3d
geometry into 3d studio. I am still a novice at this but I have imported
several
models into 3d studio from GDS. These models range from an equipped laboratory
to a 15 story tower over a renovated theater. I have also imported a small
community college and I am currently cranking out an auditorium. If I can help
you out in anyway let me know. Sorry if I jumped in on this thread and
provided you with nothing but useless drivel.

Robert,
My inquiry was regarding alternative low priced CAD Programs to AutoCAD. Maybe
even Generic CAD in 3D if anyone has had experience with inputing those files
to 3D Studio. I haven't used Generic CAD so I'm defering to this forum's
expertise.
I've been an AutoCAD Dealer for 5 years and and Autodesk Multimedia ( 3D
Studio & Ani Pro ) Dealer for 1.5 of them. I'm used to using the AutoCAD
Product and the Higher priced third party packages like ASG now part of
SoftDesk (formerly DCA) which I'm also familiar with.
My client only has enough money budgeted for his CAD system and another
$3000.00 for software.
The problem is, I can't sell him AutoCAD _and_ a third party product like
Architectural Power Tools
( The Best Priced add-on for his needs )
AND get him in to 3D Studio all for under $3000.00 . (3D Studios List) I might
be able to convince him to spend a little more for a Generic CAD program if
their was a similiar add-on that would allow the creation of 3D Architectural
Geometry. Saaaayyy maybe up the anti to about $4,000.00 for the software
investment.
Even if I discount the 3D Studio to $2500.00 as part of a Total Package deal
I'm still hard pressed to get him in to the CAD Package I'd like to see him
in….which of course is AutoCAD. Jeeezz what can you really do with $1500.00?
Add to that the price of the AutoCAD third party add-on and he's certainly
going to be over budget.
The Client really wants to put this together to do the Renderings and
Animations which are the main focus of this System.
He can survive with working drawings on the boards which is what he's doing now
but as a small business he's looking to impress larger clients and the best way
to do that besides the "Quality" of his work is… Getting thier attention in
the first place.
How you Say?
With full color Renderings and Animation Walk Throughs!!!
Hope you've got the full picture now and I would appreciate it if you told me
what "GDS" is?
BTW I'll probably have to bite the bullet on the 3D Studio and Talk him into
getting AutoCAD and Starting with a "Smaller" less expensive Rendering Program.
As a Consultant I have to do what's best for my client's business as that will
ultimetly be best for mine too.<g>
Sometimes It's hard to start someone out with less than you'd be happy with
yourself.
Thanks for the input.
James M. Murphy
Perhaps, if he can't afford to do the walk throughs and renderings in house at
first, he could farm them out untill he can afford 3D Studio. I would think
that in his position AutoCad would be the priority.

Woops! I didn't scroll your message down and read the part where you were
going to sell him Acad first, and a rendering package second. Pardon my slider
button faux pas <g>.

John,

I almost did the same thing..til I read you second message…Hmmm.. Must be our

Oh yeah? I brew exlusively with Jitter Brothers coffee. What's your brand?

James,
>>>Hope you've got the full picture now and I would appreciate it if you told
me what "GDS" is?<<<
Extremely oversimplified history of GDS [Graphic Design System]:
Born: Cambridge, England
Bought and further developed by McDonnell Douglas here in the U.S.
Couple years ago it was purchased by EDS [Don't know if Ross Perot had anything
to do with it.]
Just a month ago the software was purchased by an entrepreneur/former EDS exec.
GDS uses VAX/VMS for an OS but is soon to welcome WindowsNT and I await a
trial spin on one of DEC's Alpha PC's which should put the pentium and
sparcstations to shame for an excellent price point.
The software is becoming very popular in the GIS world but I have only used it
for Architectural Design.
The price is not right for the client you've profiled and would be like giving
a kid trying to learn to ride
a bike a lamborghini. The software is better described as a graphic database
because of its inherent
object based structure. I should think any facilities managers [and european
quantity surveyors out there] would worship its ability to store data attached
to graphics. There are modules for precision solid modeling and viewing. The
modeller is where I have created all of my base geometry for import to 3D
Studio. There is another extraordinary module where I put all of my zillions
of pieces together called PAM [Parts Assembly Modeller]. I have also created
site meshes directly from survey data in a Site Modeller which automates the
process for complex terrain.
One drawback to this software is that there is no photorealistic renderer. The
viewing module offers excellent shades and shadows and even the lighting isn't
too bad. Someone dropped the ball in material
editing so GDS has always maintained a relationship with Wavefront for such
things. GDS makes porting to Wavefront very easy but thats it.
Enough about GDS. Now lets talk about MicroGDS [also sold as Wincad]. This is
a new 32 bit Cadd package for Windows written by a few of the original
Cambridge boys who wrote GDS. I am demo-ing this currently and my first
impression is that it packs a lot of the features that GDS offers. Microgds
includes attribute data, OLE, solid modeller and also the ability to do
walk-throughs. I have not found that it packs anything more than wireline 3D
rendering cababilities. Of course this is where 3D Studio comes in. I wish I
knew what the price tag was on this software but I'd guess in the $2,000 range.
Probably still breaks the budget for your client but MicroGDS has some features
that you may be interested in.
By the way, I knew not that you were a dealer for AutoCAD and have enjoyed
reading your copious messages. I am impressed with your approach to
objectively outfit a client with a system tailored to his needs. I suspect
that you have many satisfied customers.
For whatever its worth – For a guy starting out on his own in architecture [or
anyone in architecture for that matter] a rented laptop playing brief and
varied animations of past and present projects blows prospective clients away!
I have a lot to learn about 3D Studio but its going to win me a few projects.
Now about designing the James "What's the 'M' for ?" Murphy memorial animation
laboratory, summer villa, corporate campus, stadium, ……..
Ciao for now,
